A new girl started with me this week.
Very small. Very shy. I wasn’t sure what to do with her. I handed her a vest and gloves and had her start sorting trash. I wanted to see how serious she was about working.
She was very open.
I’m desperate, she said, I’ll do anything.
Be careful who you say that to, I replied.
Why? People will take advantage?
You don’t want to find out what “anything” means to some.
She continued to tell me everything. She has three kids. Her first was a product of rape when she was a teen. On and on.
She did work. She didn’t hesitate. She sorted the trash. I moved this girl into a role more suited for her.
I’ve always said I can find work for somebody who actually wants to work. I tried to find out how flexible she is.
Can you work Saturdays?
No, I’m so sorry. I have nobody to watch my kids.
It’s okay. You can’t insult me. Unless you tell me I’m ugly. Then I’ll be insulted.
My lame effort to get her to relax turned against me. I thought I was being clever. Maybe she would laugh.
I got a lead pill instead.
Oh, no, you are a very handsome man!
I was filling out some paperwork at my desk as she said that. I looked up, it’s okay. You don’t need to do that.
There is no question that the most underrated part of being a manager in this world is being accepting of personalities. Understanding where people are coming from.
And not dismissing anybody based on first impressions.
The verdict is still out. All it will take is that first Karen calling in. She will break.
I’m not looking forward to that.
But I’m hoping the lead pills stop first.
I can’t choke those down.
