I just read this in the local news and just don't know what to say:

Iraqi refugees to be resettled in Fla.
MIAMI — A United Nations official says many Iraqi refugees will be resettled in Florida and around the nation.

Larry Yungk, a U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees senior resettlement officer, made the comments at a conference Thursday. He says Iraqis displaced by the war are among new groups of refugees who will increasingly be resettled in Florida and in the U.S.

The U.N. has referred more than 42,000 Iraqis for resettlement in the U.S. Of them, 15,000 have already arrived.

Florida resettles 25,000 to 28,000 refugees annually, three times more than any other state.

The majority are placed in South Florida.

The Miami conference was attended by case workers, educators and social service providers for refugees.

Now I certainly need more information. Little questions are swirling about in my head. Minor details such as who is going to pay for their Healthcare and Housing until they are settled and working. Schooling? Who is going to provide them with jobs when we are near the top of the jobless list? (8.1%)

We have a few Iraqis in the UK (that is a British understatement).

We also have more former inmates of Guantanamo Bay than the whole of the US.

We took Jewish refugees from Germany in the 1930s when many countries turned them away.

We took Asian refugees from Idi Amin's repression.

Apart from the Gitmo inmates we have had little reason to regret taking genuine refugees into our country. They have brought far more to our country than their suitcases.
