The things you pick up when you're websurfing... I found this interesting little snippet, and thought that I'd share it with you.

HomO (the ombudsman for gay & lesbian rights) has found that there is nothing in Swedish law that forbids persecution of gays as a group, and the Ombudsman has therefor no legal possibility to act in this matter.

Sweden, 2004. It's great, isn't it?

Saw this too. The laws that exist deals with persecution of ethnical groups. In which case being gay does not suprpisingly not apply. Your sexual orientation as an individual is however protected from discrimination and persecution by law.

What I think the ombudsman is trying to say is that the laws that he has to work with are too tricky to enforce and make a change in society with, since it only allows hin to focus on single cases.

Still, sucks it does.

I personally think it either Sweden or Holland. With this fact, Holland gets a point on its scoreboard. But I wish I had a scoreboard in the first place.

Discrimination is a fear of the unknown that paralizes the common sense of the weak minded. I thought you knew that already Flicka.;-)

Ombudsman, and Smorgasboard, are the only English words included directly from contemporary Swedish.

om·buds·man n.
1. A man who investigates complaints and mediates fair settlements, especially between aggrieved parties such as consumers or students and an institution or organization.
2. A government official, especially in Scandinavian countries, who investigates citizens' complaints against the government or its functionaries.

(2) applies here

#L, who should be working

On the other hand, it must be quite difficult to prove that you are in fact persecuting a group of people rather than the gay guy you won't give the job to.

Which leads to the Dark Side.

So you're fucked either way.

No.
The law which exists is intended to protect individuals. There is no law to prevent say, banks refusing to open accounts for Gay Rights organisations, or the owners of venues refusing to rent out to them, things like that.

It is similar in English law. It is illegal to refuse to let a Gay book a hotel room. It is, however, open to the owner of a hotel to refuse to allow a group of Gays to hold a meeting in one of his conference rooms if he so wishes.

The argument is that what a private individual is, believes, etc. is not anyone else's business. The activities of a group of people with a common factor may be a legitimate cause for concern.

Nobody is going to trash a hotel because a Gay stays there, but it could cause a riot if anti-Gay protesters get to hear of a Gay organisation holding a conference there.

If you change the word 'Gay' in the post above to 'Rugby Players' or 'Football Supporters' no one would be likely to object to the hotel's discrimination because the hotel would reasonably expect damage and destruction. Those groups are more likely to face difficulties than a Gay organisation - in the UK at least.

What the fuck. That's unbelievable. Well, I think that's the first thing that has to be changed over there.

Og,
As you are well aware, it is not illegal to refuse a hotel room to a man because he is a football supporter, or a rugby player, but it is illegal to refuse him because he is a "gay".

PS> The thing I hate about homosexuals is that they have perverted that useful little word "gay". Their activities are their own business if they do not impinge on my enjoyment of life, and perverting the language does impinge.
