Disappearing votes?

Not to argue, but how? I’ve hit the wrong score on occasion and have never been able to change it.

When the dust settles here, it might be good to ask if that's the way it's supposed to work. I can see why they might want to let readers change votes, but I see a lot of possible problems.

The carnage may have stopped. May. I checked my vote totals again this afternoon, and they've risen since this morning. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping they have solved the problem.

I just took my stats again tonight and I'm down further from this morning. So the carnage hasn't stopped.

I checked again, and I'm down a net 13 votes in the last 14 hours. So, not as bad as before, and some stories have gone up. But it is still strange.

The loss in votes seems proportional to the views. New stories and popular stories that are still getting attention are hit the hardest. Old stories and unpopular stories don't see many changes.

I think TP hit the nail on the head when she said that the loss of views and votes was demoralizing. Even if you don't live to see the next hundred views or the next vote, most of us count those among the reasons we publish here. When those disappear without rational explanation, then it's demoralizing.

Why couldn't it have erased all the 1,2 & 3 votes. My scores would have gone through the roof and I'd be happy.

Except now I can't upload an attachment  (Under 100kb)

My scores are getting well and truly kicked for touch. I even have some stories on which the number of votes has remained the same for days and yet the score has gone steadily backwards. How does that work? Eh? :(

I'll up that ante. I'm getting ready to launch two books. I used my stats as part of my street creds in the advertising. Thank God I downloaded the stats on the 16th before all this started. Otherwise, I'd be eating crow, unable to back up what I advertised. I don't particularly appreciate being made into a liar. And the dead silence from above about fixing it...I'm pissed!

The vote losses go back to mid-July 2020, and in some cases they've accumulated to quite a bit. You might have lost more than you know.

Get pissed about it if it makes you feel better. I think Laurel and Manu try to treat us contributors fairly, and this would never have happened if they saw the problem coming.

I know. I've seen those losses and said nothing about it at the time. But I've been noticing since Christmas that stories would climb a few votes, then wham. All gone again.

It's the ongoing dead silence about problems that piss me off. Yes, they wouldn't choose to have these problems, nor would we. But to clam up for days without so much as a "found the glitch" "working on it" "repairing it" "restoring it" kind of posts.

The concept of communicating with your clients during problem times is business 101. Not the dead silence that accompanies so many technical issues here.

Unfortunately, that silence exists for a reason. Some of the worst site trolls lurk on this forum and read everything we write here. Several years ago, Laurel informed authors in this forum that there was a "sweeps" program and urged the authors here not to discuss it. What happened? It got discussed perpetually, with authors comparing notes and trying their best to figure out how it worked. The lurking down-vote trolls took copious notes and now have a really good idea how to work their way around those safeguards.

So now we have a real problem. Laurel and Manu are certainly aware of the problem, but if they acknowledged it right away it would let the trolls responsible know that they had succeeded. It might even let them know in advance what the site is doing about it. Yeah, it's frustrating as hell for us as authors to watch our votes bleed away and our scores drop. I've been bitching about it as much as anyone, mostly because I wanted to make others aware of the problem.

Now I'm sure that the site knows, that you know, and I'm going to shut up about it and get back to writing. After all, that's why I came here in the first place.

The site knew about it and said so at the start of it but not in this forum. That's what the Site News & Tech Support forum is for.

I checked my stats and over the last 24 hours I've received a huge addition of votes. 486 votes in one day, which I've never seen before. Also an unusually high number of views in the last 24 hours. I don't know if the problem is fixed but the vote massacre seems to have stopped, for now.

My average views/story were high this morning -- more than ten times what they were from Friday through Tuesday. I haven't lost votes since Tuesday, but I haven't been losing as many as some of y'all report.

My views on my newest story seem to be sorted out now, jumping from 1500 to 2500 overnight, only a couple new votes, but 155 votes from 2500 views makes sense (at one point I had 50 votes and only 30 views).

I was hoping this fix would reinstate my only HoF story which had finally got its 100 votes to qualify, but it's not only gone down 2 more votes to 97, but also suddenly lost 0.3 of score. Ah well.

I spoke too soon. One of my older stories just lost 44 votes. That story now has 60 fewer votes then it had when the bleeding started back in July.

KQ, they've been working hard on this so give it time. My story with the highest number of votes jumped in the past couple of hours from its low of 828 (or so) back up to 1021 (about where it was when this started) and the 0.01 point loss has been restored, too. It looks like votes have been restored on at least a couple more, but not a few others, so it may be happening in batches.

My most recent story (which isn't very recent) regained 154 votes, and the score went up by 0.03 -- that puts it about where it was at the beginning of the month. This could be interesting to see.

Not mine. Where’s that jealousy emoji?

Some of mine have started to be restored. It appears to be a story-by-story kind of effort. But at least something's happening. ;)

Same here. My AF story went from 24 to 35 votes sometime in the last two hours.

Very happy with that. :D

One of my stories got its votes back. Of course, it was the only story of mine that had benefited from losing the votes (Score-wise, that is).

Not seen any restoration yet, but I daresay it will take time. Fingers crossed as 40% of my stories have suffered.

Views are back running at what seems like a normal pace again, but no sign of the missing days being added back in. I reckon I have lost in the region of 20-30k views on my story published last Friday.
