OK...OK.....I know this is a pic forum, but who better to ask about digial cams than the ones who use them!??? Would it be better if I added a pic?? lol

I'm looking for a good digital cam under $500. Any opinions, suggestions? Features I should look for? All I use now is a web cam.

Thanks for you help!

well, I spent some time looking at them, and decided on the polaroid PDC 700. I got it a walmart for 150 bucks I think. At the time, (4 months ago) I couldnt find anything with better quality, without spending 3 times as much. I have taken 1500+ pictures with it and havent had any trouble at all.

Good luck.

cam - digital

I did some exhaustive research on price/performance before I bought my first digital cam a year or so ago. I now have two, a Kodak DC 4800 and a Kodak DC 3400. The first is 3.1 megapixels, the second 2.1. Go to Kodak's web site....the successors are now available. The Kodak software is really good...for both Apple and Windows. The cameras use 'picture cards' (up to 192k!) for storage, and have rechargable batteries. The size and weight are very good. Quality of photos is top notch. If you print the photos on glossy paper, I defy anyone to tell the difference from a conventional camera. I evaluated the competing Olympus and Nikon and found the Kodak to be superior. The cameras are full featured, and the quality is GREAT. Incidentally, I bough both - new - on eBay. You have to be careful not to get caught up in a bidding war. Don't be lulled into a 'cheapie.' You pay for what you get.
Whew! I hope this helps.

Digital camera choices

We have to agree with Thor's Hammer. Don't be tempted into buying a cheapie, as you'll more than likely be disappointed by the quality of prints from them. We're pretty biased towards Olympus cameras as we've used several and have never had a problem with them and find the quality outstanding. What we'd suggest is you visit a good digital camera site and look at the options available in the price range you're interested in and make your decision based on that. One such site is DP Review http://www.dpreview.com which provides an unbiased review of all the released cameras.

For what it's worth, I'd say decide before you buy what you want to do with the camera, as that will dictate what specs you're looking for. If you're looking for large prints, a higher megapixel rating is essential, if you want to do landscapes, a wider angle lens is (probably) what you need, etc. If you're at all photographically inclined, you may need to consider a camera with manual facilities, for example.

Hope this helps.

My suggestion is the one i use. It's an HP 215 Photo Smart Camera.

1.3 MegaPixel, Digital Zoom, Connects to your USB Port to download from the memory card, built in flash, and comes with a 4MB memory card.

Runs anywhere from $99.00 at Walmart ir $129.00 through HPshopping.com

Perfect quality!

Canon G1

Great camera.....Mae13 uses it!!! I bought one about 6 omths ago. With the new G2 out, the G1 proces have dropped. A good site to purchase is

www.xtremeshopper.com, no sales tax. When compared to retail stores, the price will be dramatically lower.

Why I purchased it:

Hot shoe for external flash

Well built, feels solid

The screen folds in on itself allowing protection against damage and the option to save battery life.

Accepts both a compact flash card and the new IBM Microdisk (huge memory up to 1 gig)

Excellent lens

Functions like a 35mm SLR- allowing the user to control aperture and exposure length if you like........

To review it, and other cameras, check out

Excellent reviews.....pros and cons, easy to navigate.....

Hope that my personal opinion (for what it is worth) helps.

I use an Epson 800 and have had it for several years. Does an excellent job. My only suggestion is don't go cheap, if you want to print some good 8X10 you have to watch the pixel size. Mine is 2.1 mega. With a good memory card you can get all the pictures you want. With the Epson on High resulation I can hold 46 pictures before it is full. At supper low res.. I can get 460 picutes, though I never use that setting. Good Luck in your search.

I just got myself a Olympus D-100 and find it is very good. Easy to operate and easy to connect to my computer.

I use a sony digital mavica FD-83, It's a few years old but it's an excellent cam. it uses the 3.5" floppy disks for media and they are very cheap 20.00 for 100 @ office max.

The newer Mavica's can use either a floppy or a memory stick, you can D/L the pics from the stick using a USB connection
