That has to be the #1 memory I hold dear from childhood. My Mother read to my brother and I everyday before naptime, after lunch. My Father read to us everynight before bed. I'd sit on one side and my brother would sit on the other, on the couch, and we'd listen while they made voices to all the characters in the books.

I was read to constantly as a child. It's what my mom credits for my reading at such a young age and for my love of reading and books (even now).

i was not read to...but..i was encouraged (by teachers) to read when i got older. i think i'm the only person in my family that enjoys reading

Yep, a third cousin of mine was married to a famous (in the U.S.) childrens author, until he died. We got many books to read and have read to us.

I was read to every night. I'm an avid reader now.

I used to read to my son every night, but now he wants to read to me. There's something good about that, I think.

I can't specifically recall my mom reading to me, although I believe she did.

I do remember having these little books that came with cassettes. They had all the voices, matched up with the words. Kind of like a read-a-long.

i was read to very often and picked up reading early (wonders if that's why I like coming here----to read)

well, we didn't have a tv until I was in HS, so my mom read to us<dad and I> every night.

The bible, Chronicles of Narnia, Charlotte's Web, Little Women, Alice in Wonderland, Swiss Family Robinson... lots of others.

My mother read to me all the time when I was little. She didn't work until I was five. I think my sister (who was 2 when my mom started working) lost out because she didn't get read to as much as I did. As a result, my sister hated to read all through school, and only recently started to enjoy reading.

If I ever have children it is a ritual I will encourage. I still love to read.

You won't have to encourage them, hon. Once you start, they'll beg you to keep it up. We still never have a bedtime without a book.

(But don't try skipping any pages, no matter how tired you are. The little beggers will have learned them all by heart and call you on it every time.)

Yes, And I in turn read to my children. And hopefully, they will someday read to their children.:)

She did for awhile, until I memorized all the books.

Imagine my aunt's shock when her two year old niece started reading the book.. upside down. What talent.

everynight..mom insisted....

dad did once..or twice...but it wasn't the same...i think it helped me and my brother learn to read faster...I'll surely read to mine.

My parents read to me quite a bit...so did my grandparents.

Whenever I go over to my best friend's house I read to his kids if the situation allows.

I don't remember my mom reading to me, but she very well may have. What she did do for sure was read a lot herself, take me to the library every week and give me lots of books for holidays.

My brother and I have always been avid readers.

sigh, I've tried that trick about skipping a page (or three) when I'm tired, and you're right, it never works.

I was pretty much read to constantly and pushed to read on my own. I remember being able to check out books in Kindergarten (Which none of the other kids could do. I checked out on the teacher's thing... That's how they learned that sometimes well... I'm a little late ;))

Me too...

My Dad did cartoon voices for commercials, so it was a treat when he read to us! My Mom would read to us when my Dad was on the road. Your thread gave me a flashback to those times, snuggled in the bed, or on my parent's laps, feeling loved, safe, and secure. Thankyou! :D :rose:

Not really. I learned to read at a young age and pretty much did it all myself. But they made sure that I had as many books as I wanted.

My parents never read to me I was always rocked to sleep with real rocks. :D

Hell yes they did and I think that it made all the difference.

I have been a VERY avid reader all my life.
