The question was put to me by my neighbour.

I thought and thought and thought and couldn't remember anything about it.

Then this morning on TV the big news item was about a bank robber shooting people in France...

Which, as usual got me thinking. If one person, in one miniscule part of the world can see an urban shooting on TV and automatically think America, how many other people in similar miniscule parts of the world think the same way?

Now that's what I would call a sad indictment...

do you like getting flamed by the board???

just curiosity....

could ya be more specific?

we have a lot of guns over here.... someone's always shooting at something...

there is a shooting SOMEWHERE in America everyday.....
someone is killed by a gun everyday here ya know.

SO it was a correct statement.

Maybe, but the point is that even without knowing where the shooting was he assumed it was in the States...

It's not exactly a good reputation to have is it?

Nope not a good reputation to have....

:p

Actually, I think of Great Britian

From the London Times:

SATURDAY JULY 21 2001

Britain gripped by gun crimewave

BY STEWART TENDLER, CRIME CORRESPONDENT

POLICE forces reported more than 500 gun alerts in the seven days before the shooting dead of Derek Bennett by police in Brixton, a Times survey has found.
Four years after the post-Dunblane gun law reforms were launched, 30 of the 43 forces in England and Wales dealt with 571 incidents in which guns were reportedly seen or heard over a seven-day period. Real or imitation weapons were involved in 166 of the incidents, most in London and other big cities.

Scotland Yard dealt with 364 reported incidents in the week from July 12. Officers found that guns had been used in 158 incidents including armed robberies, shootings and attempted murders.

Police investigated a gun murder in Leeds and a house sprayed with bullets by a masked gang in Manchester. In Birmingham car-jackers pistol-whipped a young woman driver. Police officers twice came under fire on the streets of London and Newcastle. In the heart of Brixton, less than a mile from the spot where Mr Bennett was shot, police chasing two gunmen discovered a Mac-10 submachine gun fitted with a silencer.

Shame on you Brits. Tsk, tsk, tsk

Yup, I think it is. It will keep chicken asses and dumb fucks out of here knowing we carry and are willing to use it. Besides, comes in handy when we want service at the local Wally World.

Read his post again. A neighbor assumed a murder report on TV happened here instead of France. Then PeePee started thinking.

If one person made a mistake, how many others all over the world will make the same mistake?

Anyone can play that game of twisted logic to make any kind of statement they want.

"Just yesterday my friend asked me what I thought of the horrible incident in London where a man was convicted of molesting and enslaving 175 children over the past fifteen years.

I was shocked. Then I learned that it happened in Berlin, not London.

Then I thought, if one person made that mistake and automatically assume it happened in London, how many billions of other people all over the world think the same way?

What a sad indictment."

Pee=Pee boy is really reaching now. The ole boy must be running out of things to trash the U.S.

I assume you mean it is a sad indictment of the quality of the news coverage in the UK? Could be that the only violence they tend to report is violence in America while igoring their own backyard? That would lead to the natural assumption that all violence must BE in America, which would be incorrect, of course.

The media tends to shape perception for the masses. The number of people in similar miniscule parts of the world who think the same way would depend on the answer to the question "Is their news coverage any better than the poor quality coverage found in the UK?"

This is a very sad indictment, indeed

What a sad indictment!!!!!!!

This from a Brighton (UK) newspaper:

Web pervert jailed for eight years
by Nigel Galloway

A pervert who picked up teenage girls for sex on the internet has been jailed for eight years.

Peter Ashford, 48, logged on to chat rooms aimed at teenagers and met two 14-year-old girls who consented to have sex with him, which he filmed.

Judge Anthony Thorpe said: "The internet has a lot to answer for. I don't think parents have the faintest idea what is going on."

The child protection unit detective who brought Ashford to justice said the sentence would serve as a warning to other men who target teenagers in chat rooms.

Detective Constable Howard Bidmead said: "I hope it will show those predators who trawl the chat rooms that they will be dealt with severely."

One of the victims lives in Chichester. Ashford committed four offences of indecent assault, two further serious sexual offences, two of unlawful sexual intercourse and one of taking indecent photographs.

He also admitted indecently assaulting another 14-year-old girl from Norfolk and having unlawful sex with her and taking indecent photographs.

Chichester Crown Court heard both girls had been virgins when they met Ashford but had consented to what took place.

Diane Chan, prosecuting, told the court that Ashford met the Sussex girl in a chat room and told her he was 41. The relationship developed into exchanging emails followed by telephone calls.

Ashford travelled to Chichester from his home in Thetford, Norfolk, and booked himself and the girl into a hotel where he filmed the activity with a camcorder.

The offences came to light when the girl took a 14-year-old friend with her when Ashford returned to Chichester in March and again booked a hotel room.

Miss Chan said the friend became "unhappy" at what she was seeing taking place between the 14-year-old and Ashford and left, leaving her spectacles behind.

When Ashford rang her to say he would bring them to her home, she contacted the police who were waiting to arrest him.

Police found another video of Ashford with an unknown girl who he claimed was a 17-year-old from Birmingham but she was identified as a 14-year-old he had also met in a chat room.

Julian Woodbridge, defending, said the guilty pleas spared both girls the ordeal of giving evidence.

He said Ashford was using the chat rooms to search for sex but he had never claimed he was a teenager.

Judge Thorpe imposed a 12-year extended sentence on Ashford which means he will serve eight years in prison followed by four years' intensive supervision in the community.

The judge also banned him from working with children and ordered him to remain on the sex offenders register for the rest of his life.

All I said was...

...because my neighbour saw an urban shooting on TV he automatically thought it was in America and gave me incorrect information.

If I see an urban shooting on TV I don't automatically think it's America.

My comment was meant to show that it's sad when people classify a particular incident with one particular country.

It equally holds true if my neighbour had seen a news item about soiled girls panties being sold through vending machine outlets and had automatically assumed it was about Japan. When in fact it was about Belgium, or France, or the UK.
