Coy I don't know how dedicated you are to finding that answer . If you care to read through the numerous posts on my thread , you may detect a tone that he was not adverse to being on the receiving end of many of the nefarious pursuits he pertained to practising on others. Here is a link that takes you to the start of a realm of articles about de Sade as well as many of her personal letters that have been translated. I have a modest amount of knowledge on the topic , I can't with any great certainty state outright that he enjoyed being whipped by people of his employ. It may in fact be presumed from some documentation , my leanings were more orientated towards his philosophical representations as an academic discipline.

Best of luck :rose:

first, from my readings on the Marquis de Sade, his "kink" had nothing at all to do with dominance or submission. He liked to give AND receive pain, he was basically a simple S&M kinkster, and not even unique in that respect.

Agreed. Hence I used the term 'people of his employ' . He clearly took part in both acts of dominance and submission though not in the biblical sense as is appreciated within the context of this forum. Having said that considering the context of his life and experiences as can only be attained via existing documentation outside the narration of sexual acclaim he clearly would have made a 'difficult' submissive. He was an opportunistic manipulator for self gratification , not sure if that passes as dominance .... : smiles:

A classic sensual narcissist we might agree on perhaps?

Agreed also . Though I have to imagine he wouldn't embrace any definition and wonder if at times in attributing such we are trying to reinvent the wheel in the notions of de Sade. I think the moment that eagle landed he would proclaim it a sparrow.

From his works, or at least those that I've read (Justine, Juliette, Philosophy in the Bedroom, 120 Days of Sodom) I get the feeling that De Sade's primary source of arousal was outraging as many people as possible and then proving that he was smarter than they were by slipping philosophy and politics into his work. I do think that he enjoyed being whipped, but I doubt that it was his primary role. To me, he seems to be more of a dominant. Check out De Sade's Philosophy in the Bedroom though, it gives some interesting insight. I think the character of Dolmance is essentially a version of the author himself.

Marquis is all kinds of switchy.

I hear he's into sissification too.

I have nothing to add, having read Justine when very young and little more about him besides what one finds in general history books, but am greatly enjoying the discussion.

 Neon

they weren't exactly his subs, but more his hos. and yes he enjoyed receiving as well as giving; same for anal sex. and yes it's documented.

in those days people didn't place themselves in "correct" BDSM categories.
