Santa gave me a new TV set for my home office. The poignant gift was from an old friend of my parents (partially responsible for having brought my parents together). She sent me a gift my parents had given her in the 1950s that was expensive then and required some smuggling out of occupied Eastern Germany and that undoubtedly is priceless now--especially since I won't be setting a price on it.

That's pretty slow. Hope it's optically execllent. Nothing beats my K50/1.2. Or the brutally sharp Schneider Betavaron 50-125 enlarger zoom. Or the awesome DA10-17 fisheye zoom. All magickal glass. Yow.

(I cut my teeth on an f1.9 50mm Miranda many moons ago, and even and f2.8 has its advantages.)
Obviously there will be better (Tamron or Sigma, perhaps?) but I do not have a bottomless wallet, of course.
I do keep my eye on E-Bay for the odd bargain, though!

I got a Gold Class movie ticket to go see The Force Awakens, three limited edition framed scene posters from episodes IV, V & VI (the episodes that matter!), four jigsaw puzzles, two encyclopedias on the original trilogy (like any of those prequels even count, bah!!), bubble bath in the images of Yoda and Darth Vader, two t-shirts, pyjamas and six cute little soft toys..... hot damn!!!!

I have a pile of good glass I lucked into at bargain prices, mostly on eBay. That Schneider Betavaron retails at US$3700 but I got mine new for US$80. I found a Tomioka 55/1.4 for US$4 that I sold for US$250. I kept the duplicate I paid US$10 for. And US$250 is what I paid for the K50/1.2 which is arguably one of the best 50's ever made by anybody. Canoneers snap'em up when they find'em.

Slower 50's in the f1.8-2.8 range are fine and often sharp lenses. I prize my crisp little Exakta-mount Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 50/2.8 (US$7 shipped) and the Asahi Macro-Takumar 50/4 1:1 (US$55). But for general work I prefer the Pentax or Yashica or Tomioka 1.4's. The Yashica ML 50/1.4 cost a whole ten bucks.

I only have 50 lenses in the 50-60mm range. All different, all producing slightly different visual results. Slow lenses give clear pictures. Fast lenses allow surgical precision when isolating subjects, and work in weaker light or with evasive subjects. Faster lenses are usually bulkier, too, so I have some slower, longer focal length lenses that are VERY compact and inconspicuous, like an Enna 100/5.6 that's smaller than most 50's. Handy for street portraits.

I still lug around my Pentax K20D. I'll get modern one of these days.

Meanwhile, Santa stuffed me stockings with me feet. Quite enough.

Very nice! I recently rewatched the OT for Episode VII and Empire Strikes Back is definitely my favorite of the bunch. Good choice in Vader! I want to get a bust of him, but the only one that isn't wicked expensive is a piggy bank. Ah well. Might get it anyway.
