Did Abraham Lincoln Really Start The Republican Party?

If I recall correctly, Lincoln was the first Republican President, but as for the beginnings, I am not sure. All I know is, I heard they usurped the Whig Party, but it could be BS.

The Republicans were an offshoot of the Whigs. The whigs broke up over the issue of slavery.

So, although he didn't start it, he was there at it's beginnings.

Were Whigs pro-slavery?

No, those were the stiff, curled, white-powdered things guys wore on their heads back then.

Apparently nobody had invented the hat yet.

Oh OK. I heard just very little about the Whig party. So the split was over what the ideology should be?

As far as I know...half the party wanted states' rights per slavery, the other half wanted a federal ban.

The party was split along those lines.

So the Whigs that were against slavery became Republicans? What happened to those that were pro-slavery?

This can't be all that hard to google up, but it's more fun wondering.

Hmmm, I guess you are right.

Hahaha...you know the answer..they became Southern Democrats.

Oh, the irony.

Oh, the irony.

In fact, the Democratic Party was always significantly more racist than the Republican, until the 1960s, when the Dems embraced civil rights, and many white Southern Dems were alienated by that, and Nixon picked up their votes through the Southern Strategy, and after that conservative and/or racist white Southerners gradually migrated to the Republican Party, where they remain today.
