i just got a new comp with win xp. i mainly run cablebut my wife wants to set it up so she can dial into her work and connect to there system and do some work at home. now the problem is i went through the connection wizard followed everything right but when i go to connect it says no dial tone. ive checked all the properties and everything there is to check but still cant get it to work. what would be causing this? and can i run dual connections?

In my experience, the only thing that will give a "no dial tone" error is either not plugging it in, or plugging in a bad line.

i know but i checked it and it has a dial tone with my phone.

Plug the phone into the 2nd jack on the modem, right beside where the wall cord goes.

Do you have a dial tone? If not, reverse them.

Do you have a dial tone? If not, check cords, etc.

Otherwise look for multiple modem definitions in dial-up networking connection object and see if you're using a "phamtom". Deleting a modem makes it go away from Device Manager, but not always from the connection object list.

Also find the modem in the device manager list, select properties, and the Diagnostic tab, click "Query Modem".

There is a small chance (new computer) that the modem has died.

PS:

The way many connections are made to work is using VPN, which uses the internet not the (slow) dialup network.

You cable connection is used to reach a gateway box at work, and a "virtual circut" with encryption, etc. is set up so only the two ends (your computer and the gateway) can understand the traffic that passes over the public network. The gateway then passes the traffic on and off the company network just like it had come from a machine inside the company network,

VPN's are very tricky. If the company uses one, get their cook book and follow it RELIGIOUSLY.

i found out why its not detecting a dial tone. my wife changed the phone service and put voice mail on it and it now has a stutter tone. i have to get that removed and it will work.

Is there a way to tell the modem to delay a moment before kicking in? We had a similar voice-mail thing with our phone (if you picked the phone up, you heard a brief second of silence and barely audible clicks before the dial-tone came), but were able to make dial-up connections no problem.

Just a thought.

I used to get that problem too when I used dial-up. It sounds like the voice mail indicator tone is keeping the modem from connecting. There should be a way to set the modem to dial regardless of wheather it has a dial tone or not. I am not sure but I believe that the option to turn on blid dial is under "advanced options" for that particular connection.

Putting a 'W' in front of the number to dial will tell the modem to "wait for a dial tone" and putting one or more commas before it will cause the modem to pause approximately one second for each comma before dialing.

It best to set up the "disable call waiting" string in your dial-up settings and check "disable call waiting" for the pause you need rather than adding it to the phone number because "the "area code rules" sometimes add to phone number to be dialed -- the "disable call waiting" string is always the first thing sent to the modem.

why does she need to dial into her works servers ?
there are other ways for her to connect over a cable modem.
she might need to talk to her network admins about it , but there should be no need at all for useing a dial up modem.

thats what i thought ablout the cable but they told her to do it that way.

there are security reasons why they would not wan't her connecting over a cable modem. they are not the most sucure things to use to get on the internet.
