From wandering the boards I've noted that there are many Diabetics here on LIT & know that there are many new diabetics getting started on treatment & wonder if a thread on the subject would help ppl cope better as with any illness the more you find out the easier it is to know what's happening with your self.

I have been a diabeitic for 30 years.

Hi Gil,

I'm diabetic too. The most difficult problem I have is the neuropathy - the pain is unbelievable somedays. I am waiting to see my neurologist to discuss alternative treatment for the pain - maybe some accupuncture, a nerve blocker anything to get out of some of the pain.

It does get tiring to be "on watch" 24/7. I've recently (last few months) been having really fast drops in bsl - like in 10 minutes it will go to the 30's or even the twenties. Have you had anything similar?

Although the US & AUSSIE have different BSL readings I think I get what you mean, I've found almost anything can make my BLS swing out of control with high or low readings an example is when BANDIT said yes to comming to AUSSIE to see us I kept a strict control & motitored my levels closely but she she arrived I had 5 low levels in 4 days & all I can put it down to is being happy! other time it's happened too, stress, anger & almost an emotion can cause highs or lows & pain too has it's own things to screw things up & pain also tosses my BP's way up too.

I've been attending the pain clinic at the hospital for several years now but have given up as all they can give is strong pain killers which up set my tummy making me want to throw up so now cope as best I can with out meds, ain't fun but at least my brain sometimes works.

I've only been diagnosed for just over a year but I'm already getting burning in my toes. Sometimes it hurts so much I just want to cut them off and be done with it. And lately I'm having trouble keeping my levals down. It's constantly running over 200, sometimes almost 300. My doctor switched my meds and we're hoping that the new one will help. It's a case of wait and see now.

Ive been a diabetic for over two yrs now and I have alot of trouble with high blood sugars when I have an infection. or the start of a wound on my legs or if I catch a cold.

kikmosa you might want to check with your dr about gout for your toes that happens to me also also might want to check about arthritis as a source of your toe pain.

Im not diabetic, but my Fiancee was just diagnosed with Type II diabetes in February. The first few months were extremely difficult, requiring massive changes in lifestyle and currently 6 different medications. but now she has learned to manage her Blood Sugar Levels, and its no longer a dreaded affliction for us, but a fact of life.

I thought about arthritis to start with. I've had it in my shoulder for several years. But the pain in my toes isn't in the joints, it's in the pads on the bottom tips of my toes. Every step I take presses on them and makes the burning worse. My doctor has already said it was from nerve damage. I asked him why it started so early and he said most likely because they had been damaged so many times over the years that they were more sensative then normal. I'll talk to him about the gout thing though since I don't known what symtoms that would cause.

I'm so sorry that she developed this. Diabeties is becoming more and more prevelant in our world these days. And it's linked to so many other problems. Be sure and get here doctor to check her cholesteral levels as well. High levals seem to go with diabeties hand-in-hand.

Well, a couple of them get a bit numb once in awhile. And one has been numb for over 14 years and probably always will be. I hope it doesn't get worse in the cold for me. I just moved to a very cold place last August. This burning just started a few months ago and I'm not looking forward to winter now.

Kikmosa it sounds like neuropathy (disease of the nerve/nerve damage) - I have it badly in both feet to above the ankles and then developed a second type in my legs. It is very painful. I do take some meds - the burning on the tops of my feet did diminish somewhat - it is more manageable. The tingle and shooting pain in the feet is awful. I take a med for that too - it works on the pain sensors of the brain. It sure doesn't take the pain away that's for sure but until I can really get the pain to be more tolerable I will stay on the meds.

Some of the tests they do to diagnose neuropathy - i.e. EMG - are very painful too but I suppose necessary.

At night it is far worse for me and found that by putting ice packs on my feet sometimes helps the pain - I don't really know since my feet are frozen but it 'seems' better..............

Thank you everyone for posting here & hope others will drop by to just see what the thread is about because early discovery is the key to best treatment & seeing the hidden problems that raise them selves like KIKI with her feet as there are so many health issues that are caused by Diabeties, as I said i've been diabetic for 30 years & am now suffering from renal failure & am on dialysis which has added to the complications with it's own troubles & I always tried to keep my BSL's close as possible to the right target range, here we operate on a different BSL count system as our target is between 4 & 8.

As I'm posting there is a report on the news (mid day here) about human cloning aimed to help diabeties & a big hope for the future.

I just heard that too Gil. A university in Newcastle England - wanting to use stem cells for research on diabeties. I wonder what the social response will be to this news.

I'm amazed at how healthy ppl can be so hard on this as so many diseases can benifit from this, I guess all the ppl who can benifit have to make themselves heard like Michael J Fox has done in the US.

Perhaps yes, but if it invloves embryos then it will involve conflict too. If it is possible to do the research with donated stem cells from non diabetics that will be far more acceptable to the non-scientific world. I agree that so many can benefit - I wish!

Oh I can see both sides to the arguement but the reasons for doing it are not bad ones & they are talking about cloning them so they are not anyones possible babies.Ethics & morals do ring warning bells but so many diseases can be helped or even in time eliminated for future generations.

Just one question.

How in the hell do you keep from cheating on your diet when your job keeps you dealing with donut, muffins, cakes and other deserts all day?????????????

Oh the pain of some jobs:( well you could imagine they have been made by an old dribbling DV8 who never washes his hands & picks his nose & sores that are all over his body & he hasn't cleaned the muck from under his nails for years either.

Does that help??????;)

Thanks for dropping by & hope you & others can keep bits of info comming so we can compare treatment & cures to different things that crop up for us diabetics.

My sympathy to your fiancee as it is a big slap in the face finding out you have this desease, was there any counselling when told?

I think this is needed to help the new ppl cope.

So many think Diabeties is a result of being over weight but that isn't fact as HALLE BERRY is a type 2 diabetic & llok at how fit she is.I saw this in a magazine while in the waiting room at the hospital, can you name any other famous ppl with it?

My doctor has recently changed my meds. I'm taking 500mg of metformin (glucophage) with 2mg of rosiglitazone maleate. The name brand is called Avandamet. Has anyone else taken this? I'm wondeering if it's causing my headaches or if it's just the weather.
