Developing Pictures, a hassle.

I am interested in taking pictures of my girlfriend for purposes other than sex. I am a painter and I need them to reference for a painting of her. She's willing, gets to keep the negatives and prints when I'm done with them, etc... but there is a problem. I've noticed that public film development (Wal-Mart, Wolf Camera, etc...) is not going to work out more than likely. I've taken in pictures of mundane everyday situations and had them not developed because the workers said they were "inappropriate." If anyone knows of a place I can get these done, it would be a great help and a contribution to my artistic endeavors. Thanks for your time in advance.

Try a locally owned camera store that does developing instead of one of the chains. I'm in a smaller, rural area, and even the local store here will print just about anything, as long as it doesn't have any kiddie porn in it.

That might be a problem, as I live in Atlanta, GA. Not exactly rural. I guess when I take a trip back to the hometown I could try to find a place. Otherwise, if anyone knows of a chain that wouldn't have a problem developing these types of photos (full nudity but no sexual intercourse or even suggestion of it, just a nude body) please inform me. Thank you.

I worked for Ritz Camera many years ago. The policy then was that none of the minor employees could be the ones who were printing them. After that, it was at the discretion of the person working in the lab at the time. I would suggest that you always be upfront with the lab tech and tell them what images you have. Also, you might even tell them the ages of the person/people in the photo so that they know that they are not dealing with a child abuse issue. Be sure that you take them to a place that does work in-house. The mail order labs would be a big waste of time if they won't do it. Check in your phone book and call some of the independent companies. I'm sure you will find someone who will do it for you. Also, if you haven't tried this idea... go in "after typical management hours" and talk directly to the person making minimum wage and ask if he/she will print them!

Best of luck!

There are three possibilities:

1: Find a film lab that advertises "discreet developing" -- they'll develop and print anything except child porn. You're more likely to find such a lab in a big city than elsewhere.

2: Learn to develop and print the film yourself. Developing film is NOT difficult, nor is it particularly expensive for a minimal darkroom setup. Devloping can GET expensive if you're the type of person who has to have the best and latest technology, but a basic darkroom setup and the required chemicals are fairly cheap.

3: (BEST) Go digital. Digital Cameras are fairly cheap and getting cheaper all the time. They offer the advantage of instant review and easy editing/cropping -- in addition to the privacy aspect. A 3 or 4 megapixel camera can compete with most film cameras for quality images and is a permanent solution to the privacy issues involved in nude photography. (a lab that will print your pictures one day can change ownership and/or policy the next.)

MOST chains (Wal-Mart is an exception, as it is run by fundie Christians) do NOY have policies against developing those sort of photos in their in-store labs
I know Eckerds and Walgreens both allow pics containing "simple nudity" to go thru
However, taking them to those places CAN result in copies of your pics being passed around
Going to someplace like Wolf or Ritz that deals in photography or going to a pro photoshop and talking to them about what's on the film FIRST is your best bet
Developing COLOR pics at home is a REAL pain in the butt, BTW
Going to any place local that sends your film elsewhere to be developed can be a problem tho
If it gets sent out of state you could be breaking a law
So look for a good local 1 hour place

If you do not need enlargements try Polaroid. No development problems, no chance for "extra" copies, no negatives.

The "One shot" camera is easy to use and gives good pics. It has been the standby for "discreet" photos for years.

A digital camera is the way to go, in my opinion. I've been kind of a photo buff all my life, and always swore that digitals were crap -- until I tried one. I got a Nikon 3 megapixel camera about a year ago, and I'm amazed at the quality of the photos. You can take pictures that you print out five minutes later, without having to worry about extra copies being made by the horny photo store geeks (or the cops greeting you when you pick up your pictures the next day, which actually happened to a buddy of mine).

You can store the photos on CDs, and the features of PhotoShop or comparable programs are really amazing. Some digital cameras can even take short videos as well.

The other option is to eschew the still photos altogether and stick with standard video cameras, but I really like the look of posed nude photos.

I still use my slr for landscape photos and things that I want to blow up to 8x10 or bigger, but for kinky pictures of your naked playmate, a digital camera can't be beat.

True. Developing Color pics anywhere except with an automated 1-hr photo processing machine is a pain in the butt. However, it is NOT difficult, just time consuming and tedious once you learn how it's done.

The main problem with home developing color is setting up a darkroom -- a color-safe darkroom has to be a little "darker" than is required for B/W processing.

However, B/W pictures might be more thn adequate as painting references and B/W processing is fairly simple and easy to set up.

Inclined to agree here. Digital is the way to go and you can easily print them up yourself at practically any size you need.

JJT,

Two places come to mind.

"The Automated Darkroom" is a darkroom rental place that also provides photo finishing, It's at 3833 Roswell Road in the Tuxedo Atrium. The guys there see this sort of photography all the time.

Also, there are a couple of custom labs near the intersection of Howell Mill Rd. and 14th St. that would do this. The place I use is on 14th between Northside and Howell Mill, and there's another on Howell Mill.

When my old 35mm bit the dust i didn't consider getting it fixed!

We already had a digital camera and photo printer and never used the 35mm anymore anyway. ( I was going to loan it to somebody.)

A couple of tips.

Get one that will run off of regular AA batteries.

Get one that has a view screen on the back, that way you can see if you got the picture right, also its a lot easer to aim!

You don't need a top of the line digital camera unless you are a news reporter or a professional photographer, besides all of the extra crap you will never use are figure out anyway.

My I also suggest the little memory cards you can change out.

Short of getting a digital camera or dealing with poloroids, you can check out some online services. Basically, you send the roll to them, they develop it, and send you the pictures and negatives. I've never done this, but I do know of people who have and they have had good results. Depending on the company, some will also send you a CD. I've included a few links for you to check out, but I cannot speak for their reliability as I've never dealt with them. If you do a search on "adult film developing" you will get quite a few hits on Google. Be aware, however, a lot are just links to porn sites, so you have to choose carefully.

Good luck!

Have to agree with Zack. My AV was taken with my digi as were all of the photos I took whilst visiting MY-Sir this past month. Those I want to print, I take to my local lab and those that are private, I download directly into my PC.
Forget about 35 millimeter! Too much hassle and not worth it, imho.

-kym- >>sigh<< enjoying the memories from my AV :)
