Desktop Computer Help Needed

but not instantly.
My desktop is shutting off quickly also. My fan's working and I could run MB and MEM diags without it overheating and shutting off. Using Speedfan and the BIOS to monitor, I now see it must be that the chip that senses the temperture must be bad. It wound jump from 40c to 103c in an instant, which Windows detects and shuts it off.

Looking for an old motherboard now.

obtw, fans and heatsinks are both needed.
In testing, you can do without a fan a lot longer than a heatsink.
Without a heatsink, it will overheat in seconds or less.

Can you confirm that the CPU heat sink fan is functional?

I've seen cases where there's a BIOS corruption causing the CPU to malfunction and/or the board to cool improperly. If you think you can update your BIOS without a shutdown then give it a try. Do NOT try this if you believe your computer will crash during the update process.

Also a borked power supply can send the wrong voltage to your bits, causing overheats.

MB on order

Voltages are good.
It's not bios. Can run Mem & MB diags with no shutoff. And, no, I wouldn't dare update the bios in this condition. It would never work again.
I can confirm that the CPU fan is working. (My fingers are shorter):)
Speedfan shows voltages and fan function ok, and I looked at it!
It could be the cpu, but I don't think it would have ran the diags for a long time if it was bad. It's the 8712 chip?, I hope.
Getting another MB of the same type. I'll let you know how it works.

Does your board have an option to update the BIOS without loading windows?

Eureka!

No, I'm not going to Nor Cal, just happy my old PC is working again.
I replaced the motherboard with one that was supposed to be the same.
It was actually from an Acer PC and mine was generic. I had to download Ethernet and Sound drivers from another computer and copy them here and install, but it is working fine now.
This is on the old PC!
Another thing is that the PC is much quieter now. So I'm sure that the detection chip was sensing the wrong heat and making the fans run too fast.

Now I can use all my old XP programs, my parallel port printer, good speakers, etc. And, I managed to get a new Windows 7, I5, 17.3", 6MB, 750GB laptop for $549. It's been a good month. Thank you, Lord.

Back to the youporn and downblouse threads. LOL:D
