Okej everyone, I want to see a list of the 10 CD's you'd have if you were stranded on an island. I'll go first...

4. Tristania "World of Glass"

5. U2 "Achtung Baby"

6. Hooverphonic "Blue Wonder Powder Milk"

7. Sting "Best of Sting: 1984-1994"

I thought it would be easy listing my top 10, and indeed it was hard!!! Those are my top 10 for the moment. lol

You're a huge Portishead fan...I'm going to have to listen to them someday. Didn't they have a song called "6 feet under?" or something like that?

  • De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising (1989)
  • Atmosphere - God Loves Ugly (2002)
  • Goodie Mob - Soul Food (1995)
  • Nappy Roots - Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz (2002)
  • Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Star (1998)
  • Talib Kweli + Hi-Tek: Train of Thought (2000)
  • Talib Kweli: Quality (2002)
  • Dr. Octagon(aka Kool Kieth) - Dr. Octagon (1996)
  • U2 - Best of 1980-1990 & Best of 1990-2000
  • UB40 - Labour Of Love (1983)

It was very very hard and i'm with you on that, this is my list for NOW. But one CONSTANT threw out it all is my Miles Davis and Portishead.

The song you are refering to is called 6 Underground and Preformed by Sneaker Pimps. You can hear it on the album I selected or you can hear it also on 'The Saint' soundtrack.

:) You should most certainly listen to portishead, because Beth Gibbons is the best female vocalist i've heard in a long long long long time. I'd say ever, but really now..Ella? Janis? Either way, pick up a couple tracks, namely Sour Times, probably there most famous.

Feel free to PM me if you feel like talkin' more about music, i'm always up for fiinding new music.

Best female vocalist? Hmmm, now I'm curious....what do you think of Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star?

Good one there with UB40...I almost listed Legend by Bob Marley.

My ten long-time favorites:

1. A disc containing Faure's and Durufle's requiems. I sang in a choir as a tenor in a live performance of Faure's requiem, and it stuck with me. Very stirring. Brings tears to my eyes. Favorite track: Libera Me.

2. Steel Pulse, "True Democracy." I've had this one for years. My brother had a copy and it reminds me of him and when I was younger and more idealistic. Plus, it's great reggae and not too political like Steel Pulse got, later. Favorite track: Chant a Psalm

3. Peter Gabriel "Security." His trademark wail was never better than when he sings "San Jacinto" and the funky "Shock the Monkey." Favorite track: San Jacinto

4. Prince "Purple Rain." This is Prince's masterpiece. Totally 80's, funky and psychedelic. His best work, IMO. Favorite track: I would die 4 U.

5. The best of Thomas Dolby, Retrospectacle. Besides "She blinded me with Science," the rest of Thomas Dolby's music is understated and introspective, but slickly produced and easy to listen to. Favorite track: Flat Earth

6. Daryl Hall and John Oates, Greatest Hits, Rock and Soul part I. Pure nostalgia. Reminds me of sitting in high school detention with my earphones on, lusting after pretty girls. Favorite track: Sarah Smile

7. StereoLab: Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night: Self-consciously weird and intentionally inaccessable, but ultimately it kind of grew on me. Abstract jazz pop? Favorite track: Infinity Girl

8. Esquival! Other worlds, other sounds. Four Corners of the world. Early 60's, late 50's big latin band sound. Very listenable. Favorite track: Poinciana.

9. The Mills Brothers: PaperDoll 50's quartet harmonies and big band music. Neato! Favorite track: I've got my love to keep me warm.

10. Steely Dan: A decade of Steely Dan. 70's combination of jazzy rock, slick vocals, interesting lyrics and nostalgia. Favorite track: Hey nineteen.

1. U2 - the first "best of"
2. U2 - the second "best of2
3. Zbigneuw Preisner - the collection.
4. Bleu - soundtrack (by Priesner)
5. Coldplay - first album
6. Oasis - What's the Story Morning Glor
7. Next Stop Wonderland - soundtrack
8. Beatles - White Album
9. Simon & Garfunkel - greatest hits
10. The Verve - first album

You do "Pretentious Music Critic" really well. You could do a skit on SNL. God knows it would be better than the normal crap they put out. :p

If Brian could take just one record it would be No 1, Saturn - The Bringer of Old Age from the Planets Suite, by Holst

His book, apart from The Bible and the Complete Works of Shakespeare, would be Out of the Silent Planet, by C S Lewis.

His luxury would be his own guitar: the Red Special.

All right. Graciously done.

SNL is Saturday Night Live, out of New York City. It's a television show that used to be funny and quite popular, but now consists of largely unfunny skits, mediocre musical guests, and guest MCs/hosts who wear their black turtlenecks and try desperately to capitalize on the lost cache that being the host of this show once had.

I'm not familiar with this Desert Island Discs show. What's Radio 4? Is it streaming on the internet?

I think I get it, though. These are Brian May's (of Queen) choices and they play these songs, right?

On a completely unrelated note, are you a Scott?

Yes it is on the net - 9.00 am on Friday ( uk time ) go to www.bbc.co.uk and follow links etc

yes guests come on a choose their top 8 songs etc and spout some nonsence for 1/2 hour - its a bit of a legend here being going for ages

and I am a Scot - Killie boy

Sorry...but I'm much too greedy to pick only ten CDs...

The Cure...My entire collection
Toad the Wet Sprocket...My entire collection
Counting Crows...My entire collection
Train...Entire collection
Tom Waits...Entire collection
The Clash...London Calling
Prince...Purple Rain
Brian Setzer...Entire collection
Ani Difranco...Entire colletion
Nine Inch Nails...Pretty Hate Machine

...Ok...so that's a lot more than ten discs, but I had trouble pairing down to just those...this desert island thing sucks...

hmm...my list would go something like this:

Utah Saints - Utah Saints (European Release)
Madonna - Erotica
Pet Shop Boys - Closer To Heaven Demos (19-Track Acetate)
Underworld - Everything, Everything
William Orbit - Pieces In A Modern Style
BT - Movement In Still Life (European Release)
Erasure - Cowboy
Orbital - Werk
Madonna - Deeper and Deeper (Henner and Green Mixes)
KMJ - Control

(actually, I'd probably take 10 burned discs with a bunch of live performances, vinyl-rips, and a few of my own tracks)

Hey thanks for listing your top 10 people. If you look in Tower Record's Pulse magazine, they have a section near the front called Desert Island Discs or D.I.D.'s and they list 10 CD's. That's where I got the idea for this thread. Listing 5 is near impossible given my deep interest in a wide range of music ranging from classical to techno to jazz to new age to pop.

I just want to see what everyone's musical interests are and I'm waiting for someone to post all CD's by the same artist. I saw someone do that with Depeche Mode CD's. lol. They're a great band, but come on, have some variety, right?

OKej people, post some more...I wanna see what lurks in your CD wallets!
