I’m working on a tale set in a rather odd room. It has what I can only describe as a built-in bench running around the entire perimeter of the room. My problem is that ‘built-in bench’ seems rather clunky, but I haven’t been able to come up with anything better. Any thoughts?

Wall bench, (wall-) mounted bench, floating bench... there are probably other architectural terms, too.

I don't think they go fully around a room, but window seat or banquette could work.

I’ll go out on a limb and assume that whatever it’s called at the beginning of the story, it won’t be long before it deserves the name of a fuck bench.

Is it a bench for sitting or a bench for working on? Seating might go all around a room in something like a small train station. In that case I'd clarify it with some description of the bench like is it upholstered or just bare wood. A work bench would typically be on one or maybe two walls.

Not a suggestion, just a related thought. I have no idea if this is possible...but I'd like to put a sketch of my two characters and the place they play at the start of my story.

Not that I have a sketch or could draw one...

So, I guess your user name is actually pronounced 'dee-rail-it', huh? ;)
Assuming you conjure up some art, submit it in Illustrated, or submit it as Erotic Art (if it meets the guidelines) and put a link to it in the story.

Saw suggestions for 'seating counter' or 'seating table' if the word 'bench' is the issue.

The odd room had simple and sturdy* wooden benches built into each of the walls...

* or remove this or replace with alternate descriptive terms as desired...

YMMV, 'course!

The varnished pine pew like bench was fitted to the wall. It looked uncomfortable and impractical as it equally dominated the full length of the room. Like a misplaced feature from a gym.

Mmm. Thanks for the thoughts, folks. It is very much a bench for sitting, such as at a Roman banquet..
I've seen them in adobe homes. They're called a "banco." They're fairly common adjoining a fire place. Perhaps less common lining an entire room, but I saw one in a 100+ year-old home that a friend bought.

Yes! That’s the sort of thing I was envisioning.

Cool. I don't know if it's relevant, but those homes were often built into the ground so you stepped down when you entered. The excavated soil was used to make the adobe bricks for the walls. The houses are low when viewed from the outside, with windows not far about ground level, but they're normal height from the inside. They're also very energy efficient.

An old friend of mine built bancos around the inside of his adobe home (which wasn't sunk into the ground) to add mass and improve its energy efficiency.

Banquette?

I think you were okay with the original phrase. I doubt many people know what a banco is. Also, to pick a nit, I assume there is a door into the room so there is a gap in the perimeter?

I'd thought of that, but had not really decided. Perhaps it is something which would best be left unexplained, if only to emphasize an air of unreality.
