Depo Provera - Do I or Don't I?

Do any of you have any personal experience or insight into the effectiveness of this birth control injection? I know the basics but was hoping for some testimonials either for or against.

Whatcha got for me?

I see it ordered for teens a lot more lately, (which means it can't be all bad) but I'm not sure of the effectiveness.

Good luck though :rose:

ooohhh, I'm sure this has probably been covered here before, but I don't know.

My doctor told me that 50% who took it would not have a period and 50% would. Everything was great the first month I took it. THEN I started a period that lasted for 6 months. I also found myself more emotional than normal, as if I was having PMS all the time. I stopped it.

My daughter has been taking it for about a year. She has had no period, but has gained weight and has seem more emotional than normal. I don't know that I can attribute her symptoms to the shot or not.

Good luck!

pros:

very effective

neutral (for me) weight fluctuations

my periods went away entirely, which I liked

very economical

no daily dose to remember

cons:

it made me even moodier than usual

the whole shot in the ass thing

**I give it a thumbs up. Many women have had problems with it, though, and you won't know until you try it. And if you do have problems, you're pretty much stuck with it until the drug wears off, from what I understand.

Is your daughter in her mid teens? ;)

I hated it.

I spotted for the entire year I was on it, and it took a year after I stopped taking it to become regulated again.

My own personal experience, wasn't a good one. I took the Depo Vera injection for a year. I spotted the entire time! Who wants to be spotting for 12 months? Some days the spotting was worse than other's. I finally stopped taking it, and it took months for my normal cycle to return. I will add, it was effective for me, as I didn't get pregnant. I didn't gain or lose any weight either. I think everyone will have a different testimonial. The only way to know for certain, is to try it.

My ex swears by it. Plus, she has endometriosis so the whole stopping of the period thing was a major pro.

She's 18 now.

I forgot something else. When I stopped taking it, I had very hard periods with some amazing clotting. Twice in about 3 months I passed clots about 2/3 the size of my fist. That frightened me and I did discuss it with my doctor. Had it continued we were going to talk about other options.

Guess you'll just have to keep trying.... sigh.......

I got the depo shot after I had my first. I had a period for about 6 weeks then it stopped.. Completely. I was constantly stressed out about being pregnat again. Then when it came back I had it for 3 months solid.

My wife was on it for 7 years until I have had my vasectomy last February. The upside was that for 7 years she almost never had a period, and she didn't get pregnant (big bonus there, lol).

The downside is that she did become excessively moody in the last couple of weeks before the next shot was due. There was some weight gain involved, but she was too damn thin when she started it so that wasn't really all that bad. During those 7 years she had surgery 3 times for cervical dysplasia. Her doctor said he didn't *believe* that the two things were related, but he couldn't rule it out.

And if that's not enough coming off the damn thing is even worse. She's basically had 7 years worth of periods in the last 11 months and is still not on a regular cycle.

I suggest trying something else.

My daughter's comment on Depo Provera, "It apparently is so effective because it kills any desire to have sex."

She also had weight gain problems that persist long after she gave up on Depo.
