What matters in the war is that Russia controls nearly all the Black Sea coast. Look at the map below:

It's only west of the Dnieper river, around the city of Odessa, that Ukraine still has control of a Black Sea port and coastline. This is what matters, not Russia taking Kiev or the whole of Ukraine. For Ukraine to win the war, they'd have to drive Russia out of all the Black Sea coast, including Crimea. And as it's election year in 2024, the current stalemate or worse isn't going to help Mr. Biden.
