Dominion wins access to Newsmax journalists' texts in its defamation case

Dominion Voting Systems is entitled to review personal communications and text messages of Newsmax Media journalists in its defamation suit against the conservative media company, a Delaware judge ruled last week.

The ruling is a blow to Newsmax, which successfully avoided such a mandate in a similar case and sought to allow its employees to voluntarily offer up any relevant communications.

Good. The job of the news media should be to hold the government and public figures accountable, and to keep the public informed. However, they should likewise be held accountable when publishing damning and damaging falsehoods- and clinging to these lies even after they are debunked.

Newsmax, like several other far-right extremist "News" media, was never about accurately reporting facts anyway, but rather served as biased propaganda with an objective to further an extreme agenda- basing their content on conjecture and rumors rather than proven fact. AT THE VERY LEAST this should be considered highly irresponsible journalism.

$50m investment with the caveat of 'softening' its on-air approach to Quatar

A member of the Qatari royal family invested roughly $50 million in conservative news site Newsmax while Donald Trump was in office, The Washington Post reported Tuesday, citing documents and representatives for the media company and the royal family.

At the time, Qatar — a key US ally in the Middle East — was targeted with a diplomatic and economic blockade led by Saudi Arabia and the Unied Arab Emirates, which accused the tiny country of supporting terrorist groups across the Middle East, the Post said.

"Qatar had counted on its relationship with the United States for protection, but President Donald Trump initially sided with its regional rivals," the Post reported. Citing two Newsmax employees, the report said that before and after the investment, the outlet urged staff to "soften its on-air coverage of Qatar."

"We were not allowed to criticize Qatar," one of the staffers told The Post. "We were told very clearly from the top down, no touching this."

A Delaware judge ruled Thursday that the defamation lawsuit filed against the right-wing cable channel Newsmax by voting machine company Smartmatic should proceed to trial later this month, NBC News reported.

Judge Eric Davis rejected Newsmax’s attempt to squash the case and barred a pre-trial settlement, instead inviting a jury to decide whether the network defamed Smartmatic by airing falsehoods about the 2020 election.

“Newsmax reported on allegations regarding the Election and Smartmatic, but there remains a dispute as to whether Newsmax recklessly disregarded the truth,” Davis wrote in a 57-page ruling, CNN reported. “The jury must determine if Newsmax was doing what media organizations typically do — inform the public of newsworthy events—or did Newsmax purposely avoid the truth and defame Smartmatic.”

The trial is scheduled to start September 30

I am starting to suspect, however, that these right wing propaganda networks see these lawsuits and massive judgements as the price of doing business.

And if their propaganda gets politicians elected that favor their billionaire patrons’ bottom line, then it’s money well spent; Pay a couple hundred million in legal penalties, but save their billionaire patrons a couple hundred billion??? That works for them…
