Democrat Marilyn Lands won a special election for a formerly GOP-held State House seat on Tuesday. It's a marginal seat, 49-48 Trump in 2020, and Lands herself lost the last regular state house election 52-45 in 2022, but tonight she won in a landslide - 62-37 - after a campaign focusing heavily on supporting IVF and abortion rights.

Anti-choicers take note: your position isn't even working in Alabama. Retool.

I am smiling to see in the link that straight party ticket voting is still allowed in Alabama.
We had that in Texas for years, until Democrats started using it to oust Republicans.
When it was 80-20 Democrats here in Houston, the legislature rammed through a law that said you had to pick all 60+ candidates one at a time.
The result?
Democrats now hold 100% of elected office in Houston. Bluest county in Texas.

I could not find the specific articles, but haven’t Abbott and Republicans been targeting Houston and Harris county to undermine that majority?

Also, loving this:

State Rep. Shawn Thierry, a Houston Democrat who voted with Republicans on anti-LGBTQ+ bills, headed to likely primary runoff

check out the map vs. 2020!

The Abbott gang has crippled the mayor's office, not allowing Houston to issue bonds to repair local roads, must be done out of current tax dollars which is hit or miss.

They also have Very Special State Takeover Over Majority Black Schools in Cities Over 3 million (i.e.Houston)
And they've crippled the get out the minority vote efforts, but the POC keep coming to the polls!

Oh and Shawn Thierry has been discovered to be the personal "house negro" (Thank you Malcolm X) of Dallas billionaire Doug Deason. She votes however Massa Deason tells her to vote. He is primary funder of her campaigns.

Yep, if the Democrats pound away at abortion rights across the board, they are going to win most elections this time around.

And D’s can continue to win if they push the messaging of what Clarence Thomas revealed on overturning Roe that SCOTUS ‘should reconsider’ contraception, same-sex marriage rulings. Precedent doesn’t matter, IVF is just the tip of upcoming problems, and it is open season on rights and government regulations.

And don’t forget that House Republicans voted against a bill to protect access to contraceptives. They aren’t hiding their intentions for after the election if they win.

This must have been a 'rigged' crooked election by evil Joe! NO wait? Where are the Republicans? Why aren't they foaming over this thread yet?

Something is up with that.

Keep the balance shifting you, Democratic voters. Time to right the ship and sweep out some leftover pieces of broken furniture from the Congress post-J6! (y):)

Republicans Have an Internal Polling Problem

Teddy Powell lost his bid for a seat in the Alabama House to Democratic candidate Marilyn Lands on Tuesday despite internal polling conducted in December which suggested he was on course for a comfortable victory. Lands flipped the previously Republican district with 62.4 percent of the vote against 37.6 percent for Powell, a Madison City Council member. However, an internal poll conducted by Powell's campaign in December put the Republican on 47.7 percent of the vote against 36.8 percent for Lands.

Tuesday's defeat in Alabama is the latest in a string of disappointing election results for the Republicans, raising questions about their internal polling and that carried out by sympathetic conservative groups especially as the 2024 presidential election nears. Republicans widely expected to enjoy a "Red Wave" during the 2022 midterm elections, based in part on polling from conservative-leaning media, which then failed to materialize.

An analysis by The New York Times concluded that Republicans in 2022 were misled by "right-leaning pollsters using opaque methodology, in some cases relying on financial support from hyperpartisan groups and benefiting from vociferous cheerleading by Mr. Trump." These impacted the polling averages calculated by groups like RealClearPolitics exaggerating the GOP's position. The New York Times said: "The skewed red-wave surveys polluted polling averages, which are relied upon by campaigns, donors, voters and the news media.

But not enough. They're still taking too many offices, including Governors.

R's would do better to STFU on abortion. Just like D's would do better to STFU on guns.

They can't, not won't, because that will cost them voters which might not be offset by new voters who come over as a result of the new party policy.

Both sides need to aim at their supporters. All this shows is there are more people in favour of choice then against. There are also more people in favour of gun regulations than opposed.

Those in favor of choice are also in favor of limits.

The number of people who favor gun control is falling.

You and your "elk" threw away the imperfect but serviceable Roe V. Wade after nearly 50 years because you wanted a total ban.
Dobbs overturned Roe v. Wade when six activist Justices decided to fuck with precedent, after swearing under oath they'd do nothing of the sort.

The backlash has been nothing short of Fucking Awesome.
Every fucking time it's on the ballot, Republicans lose, and lose by fucking impressive margins

And now they've got a Hail Mary candidate running for President they cannot control.

Nothing but good times ahead folks!.

The simple fact is this. The majority of the country has supported abortion for a long time because the majority of the country is smart enough to understand nuance.

The others do not. It’s black and white, good vs evil until they are having a miscarriage, dying, and realize yes, it CAN happen to you too. Not just the poor or people of color.

This is correct and I was stunned when Dobbs rolled back Roe given the long history and public acceptance of abortion.

We are at a point in time where opposing fringe elements are in control of the public discourse and they both need to shut the fuck up and leave the people alone.

Fuck your "both-sides-isms" JimArpy.
This transcends "opposing fringe elements"
You have the massive center voting against fringe right wing extremists.
The RW extremists have pushed the needle too far to the right, and are paying for their sins at the ballot box.

Codify Roe
Not enough. If we codify Roe, we're back to the whackadoodle right continually nibbling away at the edges of medical autonomy.

We need a constitutional amendment to take the Supreme Court activists out of the game. Yeah, I know it's unlikely, but that's the only permanent solution.
