Deleted Comment

Hi all.
I recently deleted quite a nasty comment, it was posted on a story and had absolutely nothing to say about the story. It was aimed solely at me. I understand, we put ourselves up for criticism, that's part of the deal. I wondered, is there anyway a comment can be retrieved?

Not that I know of.

If it upset you enough to delete it, why would you want it back?

I take it you deleted it through your control panel. Have you checked the comments on the story side? It can take a few days for deleted comments to be processed. You might be able to capture a screenshot.

If it was a threat, then reporting it instead of deleting it was probably the way to go?

I'd have just deleted it and forgotten all about it, personally.

If somebody was spamming a get-rich-quick scheme in your comments, would you feel bad about deleting it?

You're not obliged to play host to somebody who's hijacking your comments section to air their own opinions.

This is not a declared critique site. It's a share site. It is not a given that anyone is posting stories here to get development help whether or not they turn off comments. Those posting to share and promote reading of their stories here should feel free to zap any comment at all that detracts from that. The site gives writers the capability to do so. Don't be guilted into accepting criticism you haven't asked for.

I don't think the site keeps deleted comments around, or if they do, it's probably not on a public-facing server. You can try checking the cache on your browser for the older version of the page in question. There's also a chance it might have been archived on the wayback machine or similar, if it was left up long enough.
