Are you allowed to share your cable modem between two machines?

Most cable companies won't let you, and try to discourage you.

To make it work, you need to use Internet Connection Sharing, or better yet, get an Internet Gateway Router which sets between the cable modem and your machines. It handles the job of disquising your multiple machines so that it looks like there is only one active.

Why do I mention this?

Because using multiple machines can sometimes produce the symptoms you are seeing. One "steals" the focus away from the other, and programs like MSN look the ability to (continue) a connection.

If you have this again, PM me. I can help you diagnose if it is a network problem fairly easily. It is possible it is something along the lines that ReadyOne described and if that is the case, should be a pretty easy diagnose and fix.

MOST likely you are just wearing it out !!!! hahaha !!!

Power off/on, and then leave one machine unplugged until it happens again. If you don't get hit in a couple of days, go buy a hub, switch, or router. Hubs are cheap, like $15-20.

I'd go for the new D-Link internet gateways that are runnin $40-$50. It will put a firewall between you and the internet besides allowing your machines to share files (as well as the internet)..

Tinks have you tried to call your ISP, and talk to them about it? I had problems with my cable modem a while ago, where it would disconnect on me, and then I had to pull the power out of it, to get it to work again. After having called them about it several times, they finally replaced it, and now it works like a charm.
