I know in certain circumstances a 1 or a 5 may be considered trolling.

However, would it be considered trolling if someone drove you completely bonkers and you went and found their story in the top list and then gave the 5 stories beneath it a 5?

Absolutely.

You get trolled for some pretty strange reasons. I included the POV that global warming is an important issue in one of my stories and the administration is ignoring or downplaying it. At that time I was keeping pretty close track of my scores. Almost every story I had posted was hit with a single "1" vote within a few hours, and their scores all dropped accordingly.

I even mentioned it on my blog on another website.

One of the good things about Lit is they police such things, so a blatant attempt to screw you is often or even usually caught and eliminated.

But as wishfulthinking mentioned, there are other ways to troll. An intelligent troller (almost an oxymoron!) can hide his efforts by just bringing a story down a little, while giving '5' votes to the story's 'competition'.

But you couldn't say they were trolling your story if they didn't touch it. And the other authors receiving 5s wouldn't care if they were 'trolled'.

Hmmm...

But they'd be voting based on something OTHER than the stories' (or poems') merit. That, to me, is trolling.

Using that definition, most Loving Wives stories are trolled by a significant percentage of the readership. The LW Nazis automatically give a '1' to any story that doesn't end in divorce at the least (they would prefer violence). The 'wimp/cuckold' crowd bombs the 'revenge' stories and lauds the 'drink their cum' stories.

And then there is DON8765, who automatically downgrades any cheating story that doesn't result in pregnancy. Now there is a troll!

Ah, but from THEIR perspective, that DOES define the story's merit.

It's all perspective.

Hell,I'm getting that "angry attitude" on my latest in the anal category...I'm getting a bunch of twos and threes because people think that the male protagonist should give attitude because he has been manipulated. It half annoys me that people are voting down the score because they don't like the actions of my players and half thrills me that I have written effectively enough that people are getting mad about it. It means I have broken through their suspension of disbelief and made them have an emotional investment in my characters.

...and I think there are a bunch of males out there in major denial. I have seen what your average man will go thru in order to get one pretty girl into bed to just lay there. Two of them at the same time and both actively working to massage his ego? pfffffft! Most men would do anything short of ritual mutilation. They might complain about themselves later, but they would do it...

edit: reminds oneself to stay well away from Loving Wives.

Oh, you've met him too?

In my mind anything that is done to hurt someone's score without any explanation or inadequate explanation is trolling. If I don't like a story and just give it a 1, I am trolling. If I don't like a story and gvie the writer feedback like, "You are pathetic, learn to write!" than I am trolling. If I give a story a 1 and tell the writer, "There are so many errors in spelling, grammar and pucntuation I can bearly read the story. Also, you start out calling your main characters Ken and Barbie and wind up calling them Dora and Don with no expalantion." then I am not trolling, but making editorial content.

As has been pointed out, a reader who thinks that any story that does not invovle a nude girl whipping a man with a silver handled whip is an automatic 1 vote may or may not be a troll, but badly needs mental help.

I'll do the same and hope to draw another immunity for the Survivor Contest. I'd been saving it for poetry with audio, but reading this thread, I changed my mind.

I'd consider that obsessed. And not in a good way.

That brings trolling to a whole new level. Yikes! :D

But imp, it doesn't define the story's merit if the troller didn't read the story. i.e., there are some guys who post public comments based upon the other comments a story has received. They'll say something like "I see that it is a cuckold story. I'm not going to waste my time reading it. I'm voting '1' and moving on."

My point is, I'm leaning towards objecting to someone voting on a story they haven't read. I remember when Bill Murray was the movie reviewer on the Saturday Night Live news. Most of his reviews were based upon what other people thought or on how he felt about one of the actors, 'cause he hadn't gotten around to seeing the movie yet.

The ultimate troll would one-bomb everybody's stories, including their own.

I got my first taste of true trolling today...

I had two stories in the top 500 and both got one bombed..... all it took was one vote and bang... they are gone...

funny thing is that they are both old stories and have just been coasting along in their own little world and not bothering anyone....

Oh well, there's always the chance of a sweep... and it was fun while it lasted...

Edited to add: I guess it's a good thing in a way... It shows me that I'm getting recognized.. at least by the trolls. So I must be doing something right....

You're correct on all counts. You can run but you can't hide around here, at least not forever. Another good one is when you get slammed on the day the monthly contest ends. More fuel for the argument that the scores should remain private during all contest periods.

Now everybody not only knows how to troll but how to troll effectively.

This would make a good "How To."

Yes, now you know how to clandestinely get rid of that annoying piece of shit that's above your story in the rankings.

Thanks for the information. Now I don't need you for anything.

Hmmm. I notice, however, that no one seems to complain about the 5's that lack a compelling explanation.

Not just the 'Loving Wives' - my brand new Nude Day Contest 'First Time' story, too, lol :)
