Or to make it more specific, how would you define a sexual fetish?

There are "official" definitions abound but I find, when a term becomes as widely used as "fetish" the meaning becomes an individual and personal one.

For example, is a fetish merely an interest or is it engaging in that particular practise a necessity for your sexual arousal?

Does it have to be something considered "kinky" or taboo by the mainstream, or can it be as something widely practised as anal sex?

Tell me, how would you define a fetish?

To me, fetish means attraction, most commonly used to describe sexual attraction to specific items/people, ranging from common such as boobs (big or small), to really weird (statues, sneezing).

Sneezing is hot. Talk about a whole body experience.

My own, that is.

I don't really get anything out of someone else's sneezing but I'll pay more attention next time.

*tickles the feather I have on hand and tickles my nostril*

A-choo!

I'm gonna need a tissue

To me, the term fetish implies a sexual meaning, although I've heard it used otherwise. I think it's an almost irrational sexual attraction to certain people, things or situations.
The animal part of the brain just grabs you by the genitals and says,"I like it!"

Speaking from the perspective of the insert-er, rather than insert-ee......sneezing IS omfg hot! I was once blessed with a partner who'd break into sneezing fits (not just ) during sex. Insta-gasm.

Well first off there is fetish and fetishism. One is a harmless attraction that is a little out of the norm one can be a problem.

Starting with fetish. A fetish is something that turns you on other than the normal act of sex or sexual organs. In my case I have a foot fetish. Feet arouse me. I get turned on by sexy stockings, sandals, toe rings and anything to do with them. This fetish can add to sexual pleasure if your partner is aware of and is cool with your fetish. My wife loves to let me rub her feet knowing it gets me horny and will by ridiculous heels she can;t even walk in just to where to bed for me. However I can have hot sex without the "foot thing"
This is where fetishism comes into play. If a fetish gets to the point of obsession then there is a problem. using Feet as an example if I were suffering from fetishism I would not be able to become erect or want to engage in sex unless feet were involved to the point there wouldn't be sexual activity otherwise this has now become unhealthy. I know a woman who likes Black men. it has gotten to a point that she will not date a man of her or any other color now matter how nice or into her they maybe to me this has become to that level.(please leave the black cock whore jokes for the interracial section) I think it is a good example.

Wiki says this:

fetish

Something which is believed to possess, contain, or cause spiritual or magical powers; an amulet or a talisman.

Something sexual or nonsexual, such as an object or a part of the body which arouses sexual desire or is necessary for one to reach full sexual satisfaction.

An irrational, or abnormal fixation or preoccupation
.

I'd have never known the first one without looking it up.

Well, in a weird way, Riles, they're the same thing. The fetishized sexual object holds power over the fetishist. :) It's a kinda magic (or different brain wiring).

This one for me... but also it can be so much more...It can also have to do with the individual you are sharing it with. One person you may share an intense connection to that fetish, while the other you feel nothing of the sort... I think that also has to come into play in the definition

I understand that, but I'd never have put it into my personal definition of what a fetish was.

And I've been racking my brain trying to think if I have one....but I can't think of one. Well...nothing that is a MUST have. I feel sort of empty now. I'm fetishless! -pout-

Well, cherie, you're an exhibitionist, correct?
It's not so much a tangible that holds power over you, but an act?

Hmmm....so it's person specific you mean?
Does that still qualify? I thought a fetish was sort of 'broad-spectrum'.

Not the act, but the feeling it creates, yes.

And I thought of it and discarded it when going over my list. Same with aggressiveness in partners. It's an absolute PLUS, but not a must for all encounters, and if you read the second definition, it says "necessary for one to reach full sexual satisfaction".

Not always, but in some cases yes... When you share your fetish, especially if they involve another individual, their reactions to you can be crucial in fanning the flames of that fetish to go from a spark, to a raging inferno.

The definition isn't that strict, actually: to reach one's full sexual satisfaction doesn't exclude satisfaction. Otherwise, we'd be talking about fetishes as abnormal sexual functions... or dysfunctions.

I agree with tek here.. It's really hard to lay such a strict definition on a fetish, since there are so many.... It's like a hard definition for the shape of a fish... there are so many different kinds and while they each have their own nuances, they share the fact that they live in water and have gills.

Hope my metaphor of fish was clear

We can not define full satisfaction.....it's an infinite concept. Just sayin'. You can't know until you' ve tried, you can't try 'til it's been thought of.....etc.

Now let's get down to business, people.....What makes your toes curl, yet causes you to blush later 'cause it was kinky??????:D

lol

You guys are making my head hurt. I think it's been defined. I'm just not convinced I've got one for the list.

Well hell, I'll turn pink cheeked from just a certain look being given, so I'm out in round one!

Sorry, lady, but that's at most asymptotically true. There are biological limits on how stimulated you can get. :p

Body or mind?

Hell, I forgot what we were talking about. My point is, even if there is some sort of hard limit....how do we know when we've reached it????

Your mind is ultimately defined by your neurons, in your body. Any physical sensation is ultimately bound to how many synapses can fire and how many neurotransmitters you can produce and release.
Infinity is a math thing. Unless you have a math fetish...

I, like many others feel flushed every time you use that current av.....'cuz I have a butt thing....;)

Hardly. Or not hardly. Whatever. We still can't know for ourselves when we reached that limit.

And we're sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo far off the point.

* I have further ponderings on that, but I'm certainly not qualified to argue; maybe not even converse....*

Are we far off the point?
If you ask me, fetishes ultimately boil down to neural connections. Now, that is sort of a gross simplification, but, is it quintessential truth.
However, I do get that the peeps might now wanna be all about neuroscience, 'cause brains, in and of themselves, aren't sexy. So, spank me? :D
