they are turning us into idits and destroying the art and science of active reading. they make us lazy.

Yes! :) Death to Emoticons! I totally agree with your quest to end our lazy behaviour!

By the way, ladies, I think it's so lame to use the froggy tongue to denote oral sex. So instead, I'm just going to say *Lick* Does that sound good?

I have *never* once used an emoticon in any of my posts on the net.

Do I win a special prize?

ah so yu hate dem lil buggers eh?

:p

actually,

i'm all for aronyms. it's just a matter of speed. i don't think they ruin elegance.

You're talking about emoticons denoting laziness, but wouldn't you also say that not checking your posts for spelling and grammar errors also denotes laziness?

aronyms?

Nah, minx, here's the thing:

A post, or an email, is like the spoken form of the language - more casual. Complete thoughts are good, but complete sentences are not mandatory. If the meaning is clear then there's no reason to get obsessive over typos or minor grammar issues.

A presentation, a research paper, an article in a noteworthy journal or newspaper should be flawless, and edited to insure so. I undestand taking a shot at him over laziness in this context, but I think he's merely making the argument for the other side on that dimension...

Further, there's a difference between being lazy and being efficient. There's a lot lacking in written communication, such as tone, posture, gesture, and so on. Emoticons may seem lazy to some, but they insure I don't need to type "JUST KIDDING" after every slightly sarcastic post.
