Well, not that it matters…but beginning with ‘Science Fiction Theatre’ way back when, a few television series have caught my attention. Including, Dallas (until it turned Soap) Mash, The West Wing, ‘24’ and now, ‘Dead Like Me’

I thought to include a link that gave an address asking for Showtime to continue the show, but I seem to have lost the link.

I discovered the program quite by accident several months ago, was intrigued by the acting of Ellen Muth and Mandy Patinkin (Princess Bride) and the theme of the program. And just last night (Tuesday, May 24th) Showtime ran four episodes which I thoroughly enjoyed.

So for those of you ‘sophisticates’ who enjoy witty humor and dialogue, an improbable but truly curious plot line filled with satire, irony and very adult language and innuendo, you might just enjoy the series…

Georgia "George" Lass (ELLEN MUTH) is a young college drop-out who has no job skills and seems unable to take an interest in anything, including her own life. She cultivates an air of cynicism that infuriates her mother, baffles her father, and isolates her younger sister. George is about to get a wake-up call.

With her mother Joy (CYNTHIA STEVENSON) insisting that she get a job, George applies to a temp agency that sends her out as a file clerk. Her lunch break - and her life - are cut short when a toilet seat from the MIR space station drives her into the pavement. George does not realize that she is dead until Rube (MANDY PATINKIN), the kindly leader of a team of grim reapers, points out her remains. Rube takes George under his wing and introduces her to the other members of his undead group: Mason (CALLUM BLUE), Roxy (JASMINE GUY) and Daisy (LAURA HARRIS).

The members of Rube's team of reapers are all, like George, people who died with unresolved issues. They still have lessons to learn that - for one reason or another - they failed to learn in life. They move about the Pacific Northwest in the full light of day. They walk the city streets and eat at all-night diners, just like anyone else. They have to find somewhere to live, cook, eat and do their laundry. They look just like everyone else but as grim reapers they appear physically different to the living than they did when they were alive.

What George experiences beyond death is the focus of this darkly comedic series. George grows through her relationships with her Boss Dolores Herbig (CHRISTINE WILLES) at The Happy Time temp agency, her fellow grim reapers and the people she helps cross over into the after life. She looks in on her family and must cope with how things continue to change without her. All of these interactions lead her to question. What if death is not the end? What if it is not even an escape from the issues that plagued us? What if it is not a way to avoid accountability, but an opportunity to accept responsibility? What if it is a wake-up call?

"Georgia 'George' Lass"
Although she is only in her early 20s, Ellen Muth can already claim a decade of experience on stage, in film and on television. A unique combination of youthful looks, mature attitude and extensive acting experience made her the perfect choice for the role of George in DEAD LIKE ME, for which she received a "Best Actress" nomination at the 2004 Satellite Awards. The dark, comedic side of the series appealed to Muth, whose previous roles have tended to be dramatic.

Muth became interested in acting as a child and started acting studies at age 10. At 14, she drew widespread attention with her portrayal of the young Selena in the Stephen King-based feature film, "Dolores Claiborne" starring Kathy Bates, Jennifer Jason Leigh (as the adult Selena) and Christopher Plummer. Despite her youth, Muth took the same professional approach to the role that any adult actress would -- researching the topic of incest and speaking to survivors. She won "Best Supporting Actress" at the Tokyo Film Festival for her portrayal.

Following "Dolores Claiborne," Muth appeared on stage in the off-Broadway production "Nine Armenians," and at the Seattle Rep in "My Good Name." Her feature film credits include "Rain," written and directed by Katherine Lindberg, and "A Gentleman's Game," directed by J. Mills Goodloe. Her first starring role in a feature film, as "Constance" in "The Young Girl & the Monsoon," earned Muth the AFI Los Angeles International Film Festival Best Actress Award in 1999.

Muth's first television roles were two commercials and a guest appearance on "All My Children." She has appeared in two episodes of "Law & Order," the television movies "Two Against Time," "The Truth about Jane" and "Cora, Unashamed," and the pilots "Being Brewster" and "Normal, Ohio." She also appeared in the miniseries "Superfire" and "Only Love," a Hallmark Hall of Fame Production.

I've seen it. :)

And, you're absolutely right....it's a quality show when there seems to be a dearth of them for the last few years.

I'm glad someone else watches and praises this brilliant, underappreciated show. My husband even likes it, and he didn't like Six Feet Under, which meant that I had to watch that one under his protests and criticisms and whining that it wasn't funny. OTOH, he likes Dead Like Me. We're watching the summer marathon and eagerly waiting for the new season to begin.

One of the few (very few) American television shows that I have enjoyed. I bought and watched the first season and quite enjoyed it, especially her first female colleague who kept each person she reaped in a separate categorized bag to show how similar everyone was.

Haven't seen any on the pay network, cause I don't watch enough TV to justify that kind of expenditure.

Besides, it seems the fate of every single good American TV series besides a few lucky shows on desperate networks to be destroyed and cancelled after a short run of 1/2-2 seasons. Happened to Firefly, Wonderfalls, and now Dead Like Me. Que sera and all that jazz.

I think the premise of the show is very clever although I don't think it has yet reached its full potential. The writers could do so much more with the concept in my opinion. I have been watching it since day one and seldom missed a new-run episode, but with four Sho channels, it was easy to catch on rerun. I hope they decide to go with a third season, it is quite entertaining.

Have not seen the show, but was surprised to learn we share an interest in MASH, Ami... though I somehow liken you more to Frank Burns than Hawkeye Pierce. ;) (You may call me HotLips. :D)

Season 8 released on dvd earlier this week for all you fans out there. It's the one series I deem worthy of owning.

Well, 'Hotlips', I do not identify with any of the characters on Mash, least of all Frank Burns. I would more have thought you to be a 'West Wing' follower but I won't give you any sly digs abour characterization.

I guess I would be more like a 'Jack Bauer' figure as on '24', he shoots first and asks questions later, my kinda guy. Allan Alda is and always has been a wimp; West Wing is kinda hard Rob Lowe does a good job, I rather like all the cast on that show for different reasons.

Sorry to spoil your illusions about me, Ami, but I don't watch West Wing, either. The only thing I meant by the Frank Burns/Hawkeye Pierce comment was something along the lines of Conservatism/Liberalism, (I wasn't implying you're a ferret face, though I've never seen you so what do I know?)

You know me, Ami, if I wanted to insult you, I'd do it with more flair and witticism (and hope you'd do a better job of returning fire!) :D :nana:
