I'm a Dawson's Creek junky. Once you get past the way everybody talks way to much, lol, its pretty good.

Teens, teen shows and teen themes usually don't get taken very seriously, but let's face it, 'coming of age' stories are timeless- dispite our distain for the things that where once so important to us all.

1. Why is it so easy to be distainful of all things 'teen'?

2. What shows do you enjoy that you are tecnically 'too old for'?

3. Any other DC fans? (no spoilers please- I didn't see it the first time:))

1. Because nine times out of ten, teens and teen life is portrayed far from how it goes down in real life. Either ridiculed (your typical high school comedy) or rose tinted romantisised (your typical teen drama series, DC included) glossing over or completely erasing the ugly bits.

2. I watch maybe 3 hours of TV/week in total. One of those hours is West Wing (for case study of cool dialouge writing/acting) and the rest is whatever is on atthe moment. So, unless the occational SouthPark is considered a kids' show, then...no.

3. Can't say I am. See #2 :)

My teen show addiction: Gilmore Girls. I still can't decide if I'm more in love with Rory or Lorilei. *sigh* (yes, I need professional help. I know this already.)

It's because teenagers attach such earth-shattering importance to the most piddling insignificant shite.

I don't watch television, so this is a difficult question to answer. There use to be a Nickelodeon show called "Taina" that I saw once or twice. It had a certain nubile pervish appeal.

3. Any other DC fans? (no spoilers please- I didn't see it the first time)
I've never seen even a second of this series.

I used to think the show was exaggerated, that teens don't speak like that, or are as deep and analytical about life - more of a "huh, huh, let's get drunk and do it!" kind of language.

Until I accidentally ended up in a club with a bunch of teenagers who acted EXACTLY like that.

So, Dawson's Creek IS realistic - assuming that the characters are constantly drunk, that is.:p

Is that a teen show?

I don't follow any series, but whenever I catch it on, I like it. I also like Ed (is that still on? we always gets stuff from two or more seasons ago here) and Scrubs for the same reason: I don't really care about the characters and the plot, but it's packed full of witty dialouge and they got actors who knows how to deliver it. I'm a sucker for wit.

As far as I can tell, all of the WB hour-long comedy/dramas are teen soap operas. I've gotten semi-sucked-in to a few, but Gilmore Girls is my must see.

I'm pretty sure Ed is over.

I adore Scrubs. :D

Wow, you've definatly never seen DC. There are lots of ugly bits.

What I hear most people complain about is all the 'angst.' (on teen shows in general) Ya, teens make everything more inportant than it is- but that's the whole point. When else in life does everything feel so increadably intense? When something as simple as a kiss is a big deal, and the anticipation is almost more than you can bear?

So yeah, teens can make a big deal out of 'nothing'- but who amoung us is above it? Our own tramas and dramas rarely seem to rate in the world at large. IF we are level headed now, we all once had hormones running out of control, greasy broken out skin, squeeky voices and bodies that didn't seem to fit. We all dealt with midterms, curfews, bullies, peer pressure, permanant records, and the looming specter of 'the future' and dire warnings about life in the 'real world' at a time when everything felt more real than ever before (or ever since).

Informercial over...

Aw, that was really sweet. P.

Just saw the season finale today. (starts all over again tomorrow, lol)

It was totally worth it. So sad, though it was hard to believe that it was really 8 years later (or however long it was supposed to be) Still, it was very sad, yet hopeful and gave a pretty freakin good perspective on the whole thing. I wonder if the finale can properly be appreciated by the target audience.

As to who she ended up w/ I think she made the right choice. I think the whole time she was afraid that whoever she chose, she would loos the other one, but she finally realized that she didn't have to loos anybody but that by not choosing she was loosing (and had lost) them both.

I like the twist the show put on 'soulmates.' And for my part, I really did believe that the two 'non-couples' who where supposed to be soul mates on the show really were.

I sure with there was someone here who liked this freakin show! (OF course they would probably disagree with me that the ending was fulfilling, I know a lot of people were disapointed esp w/ the outcome of the central love triangle.)

Oh well. Life goes on.

Make a show about teen-agers and you can't win.

Either it will be acused of being to 'angty' (melodramatic or whatever) or it will be to light and feathery and not 'real' enough.

Anyway, for those who think they skipped over the ugly bits or whatever, here's what they where saying abou the show before it even aired.

Up the Creek with Virgins, Vixens and Teenage Lust
It's not the sort of stuff you'd expect with such clean-scrubbed teenage characters.

There's the cherubic-faced Dawson, confessing it's Katie Couric who makes him "walk the dog." There's smoldering Jennifer, revealing the intimate details of the big-city trouble that landed her in small-town Capeside. And there's lunky Pacey, whose schoolboy lust for his sultry English teacher goes from vivid fantasy to awkward reality overnight.

It's network TV, all right. But it's network TV, Kevin Williamson style. In making the transition from big screen to small, the Scream writer has swapped slashers for sex and coeds for almost certain controversy. "I think we're trying to be honest and tasteful," says exec producer Paul Stupin, who helped develop Beverly Hills, 90210 and recruited Williamson after he saw Scream.

Williamson responded with an often too cute show about virginal young teens in a sleepy Nantucket-esque town that manages to be in-your-face topical and frank. And, depending on how you perceive the use of the word penis, a graphic student-teacher romance, infidelity, a sprinkling of homosexuality and a dash of interracial love, it can even be shocking.

Dawson, of course, is the centerpiece. An aspiring, 15-year-old filmmaker with a Spielberg fixation--not to mention a Jaws wall and 1941 closet--he's coming into his own and entering the 10th grade. His pal Joey (Katie Holmes) is a tomboy who's known Dawson forever. Best bud Pacey (Joshua Jackson) is equal parts clown and confidant. When into his life lands gal-pal Jennifer, fresh from the big city, ostensibly to help out her ailing grandfather and Bible-spouting grandmother.

Dawson's can be uneven. Some scenes test the believability meter, the acting can be a notch above daytime soap and the kids are not always all right with the overly eloquent dialogue. "The way these kids speak is not the way every teenager speaks, but I think it's the way every teenager feels," says Van Der Beek.

Counter that with cutting-edge topics, Williamson's inside jokes (watch carefully for posters of I Know What You Did Last Summer) and hip soundtrack (artists like Sheryl Crow and No Doubt), and you've got something teens will tune in to.

By the way, how does Van Der Beek feel about his penis size being discussed in every episode? "Not every single episode! And it's Dawson they're talking about. Besides," he adds with a shrug, "they're rather complimentary."

I think I might be jealous of TV teens. I mean, dammit, high school wasn't like that for me.

2. What shows do you enjoy that you are technically 'too old for'?

Right now, I personally like "Nip/Tuck", "Touching Evil", "Smallville" and some melodramatic Japanese dramas. I am probably too old for "Smallville", but I was addicted—hugely addicted—to "Farscape", "Buffy", and "Angel" prior to cancellation. :)

Not really a fan of DC but I do think Katie Holmes is really cute and I would like to look like her when I grow up. ;)

IF that is you in your av, you look very cute. Kind of resembling an asian version of Holly Marie Combs (Piper from Charmed).

Well ... Time to rub the dust of this old thread :). I just saw the series finale today again ... oh boy and I almost cried again, like the first time I saw it.

So yes ... there are other DC fans in here, I admit it. I loved it, from the moment I first saw it and didn't want it to end.

But hey ... now I've got Smallville, The O.C. and other stuff to watch :D.

My name is Cheery, and I'm addicted to DC

I loved Dawson's Creek! I have special memories of that show. I liked it okay my senior year in college. Then a few years after it had been running I started watching it again. My best friend that I never got to see was hooked too. He and I both worked a lot and never saw each other, so we made it a regular event. We'd watch that show every week together.
Then my mom died. I was 23 and it almost killed me. One of the things that made me pull through was sitting on the couch with my head in my friends lap every Wed. night. It was a constant comfort that looking back on, helped heal my heart as much as one can heal such a wound that will never truly heal.
I remember the episode when Dawson's dad dies. It was like 2 months after my mom died (my best friend's dad died when we were in high school). We just sat there and held hands and cried. It was like watching what we had been through helping each other through loss.
And for the downers of the show. We were a lot like that in high school. Just not as glamourous.

But now I find myself hooked on One Tree Hill and Smallville. Smallville can be wierd, but I love the bald headed Lex! You know me...bald heads.
I can't get into Gilmore Girls. Everytime I see that woman all I hear is "Fuck me Santa, Fuck me Santa."

I also like South Park. That show's got great stories. Oh and Scrubs! I just never remember when it is on.
