As many of you know my organization recently dumped half its staff I survived - but - the entire systems staff took the offered buy out and will be gone and not replaced.

So guess what?

They think ("they" are news people) that since I know a bit about broadcasting and the like, technical stuff - that I should get involved with systems.

Is that a hoot or what?????

You all know me - I don't know shit about Hubs, or ISB's or MCI's or what ever the fuck you all sometimes discuss. I can't even "still" post a freaking picture. Hell, this is absolutely true - I have never "open a file" don't know how. I do everything in e-mail (mine has spell check) and I either keep it there or print it out hard copy.

So, that don't make a shit's bit-o-difference. They have set aside big money - in the mid-5-figures (wow!) - for me and this other dude - to "get trained."

My question - HELP!!!!!!!!????????!!!!!!!

Where? Anywhere? Books, nationally known courses, internet sources - anywhere - where can I find info that will help me, step by ting step - to at the very least "converse" better than I do now?

You know - "Systems for absolute fucking Dummies," type of thing. Hey......

Please let me know. Thanks. Anything will help.

LOL

I'm imagining the techno-mumbo-jumbo that will be spewing from Sparky's mouth sometime in the near future. From techno-dud to techno-stud! Yehaw! Saddle up Daddy, you're in for a boring ride.

I am doing my PhD in computer science right now... Let me know what kind of info you need and I will see what I can do for you. Or just send me an email with all your questions and I will try and make it as plan as can be.

I'm lucky, I do have a logical....

Opps! Thanks CBB…..

I'm a pretty good techno-head - but my background is sound, acoustics, video, light, lenses and the like......

Truth be told - I've been running around the world (for over 10 years now) doing my job, making TV happen, making photos happen etc., - so much so - that I have missed "all" my early opportunities for even the most basic, user training course, that my organization has offered. Ever - not one sit down with a teacher.

Everything I know is self taught, or somebody from nearby comes over and shows me - but that learning method is not new to me - because "everything I know is self taught" - I'm sure most of you can tell.

Anyway - I need basics - not user basic's really - I'll eventually figure those out for myself. I need "system" basics.

Basic "system flow-charts" would be great for a start.

I'm a very good trouble shooter, if I had a few examples of popular systems set-ups, LAN's for small to medium businesses and knew basically "what each box did" I could start from there.

Thanks again.

No prob

No prob man... I will get some info for you. I think I can point you to a couple of books.... Or post or send you some info on the break down....

Don't worry all is well.

Step one: Find out what system you'll be expected to work with. (hardware names, and operating system/software names.)

Step two: Search Amazon.com, BN.com and any other booksellers .com you can find for books on the systems you'll be expected to use.

You'll want to find a glossary of computer jargon as well.

Talk to the people who are holding things together until the company gets someone trained to get their recommendation. You'll need to get on their good side in any case, because if they feel slighted by being stepped over for the management position, they can sabotage anything you try to do.

Also find out if they are connecting to the net... that will cause you big headaches.. also... The best source is the universites book store or colleges..... I think I found what I was looking for..... But just to make sure... I will look it over and do the trans on it...

Not sure where you are from, but perhaps you could go to your local community college and look into a certificate program which could help you out.

This is a really good idea...a lot of community colleges offer certification now. And even if it will be relatively soon that you will be taking over, that certification will help you at this job, or another job if a better offer comes along.
