TOM DASCHLE'S LIE

Last Sunday, Tom Daschle appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press" to slam Republicans some more...but wound up lying to the viewers.

Host Tim Russert asked Daschle about a recent party at Vice President Dick Cheney's residence. Daschle called it "inappropriate." Then Russert pointed out that Daschle had hosted a $5,000-per-person fundraiser for about 100 donors near the top of George Washington's head on Mount Rushmore in October 1997.

Daschle hemmed and hawed. He said the folks attending his little shindig were his friends--even though the guest list included lobbyists from Bell Atlantic, Bellsouth, Ameritech, Sprint, Miller Brewing Company, and other companies.

Then Daschle gave his interpretation of the difference between a party at the vice president's residence and a party on Mount Rushmore. He said, "t's something that is done--you can't go to the vice president's house. You can go to the top of Mt. Rushmore regularly. People do that almost every week. In fact, I'm sure they're doing it today."

Nope--they're not.

The park's chief ranger told National Review that the general public is barred from the spot where Daschle entertained his lobbyist friends. Any ordinary slob caught climbing up the carvings would be arrested, jailed, and fined $500.

Why did Tom Daschle tell a lie? Because he got trapped in his own hypocrisy. He had to distort the truth to get out of the corner he'd just painted himself into.

This man can't shoot straight with the American people...and he's about to
become the Senate Majority Leader.

Yes, we get it.
Clinton makes up stories on the fly,
Gore makes up stories on the fly,
Dashle is nailed in an untruth,

But these are great leaders.

Is Gephart a good leader?

Would you like a comparison between his Democratic state and my Republican state,

or is that too much Spy VS Spy for you?

It's a mad, mad world!

And what if Republicans just started making up stories wholecloth? Do we get such gentle treatment or do we get the rail?

Stronger spine and more charisma; interesting that you'd choose that over honesty and integrity. But then you are speaking of Democrat leadership, aren't you?

And while you could say the same of Gephardt, it would be an equally outrageous lie.

Remember in 1995 or so when Ben Nighthorse Campbell of Colorado changed parties to the Republican party? Daschle told Campbell that the right thing to do was resign and seek election under his new party affiliation. I'm waiting for Daschle to make the same declaration to Jeffords.

Any bets that he'll do it? I'm betting he doesn't because he's a liar and a hypocrite whose only true interests are his personal political power.
