TOM DASCHLE'S LIE
Last Sunday, Tom Daschle appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press" to slam Republicans some more...but wound up lying to the viewers.
Host Tim Russert asked Daschle about a recent party at Vice President Dick Cheney's residence. Daschle called it "inappropriate." Then Russert pointed out that Daschle had hosted a $5,000-per-person fundraiser for about 100 donors near the top of George Washington's head on Mount Rushmore in October 1997.
Daschle hemmed and hawed. He said the folks attending his little shindig were his friends--even though the guest list included lobbyists from Bell Atlantic, Bellsouth, Ameritech, Sprint, Miller Brewing Company, and other companies.
Then Daschle gave his interpretation of the difference between a party at the vice president's residence and a party on Mount Rushmore. He said, "t's something that is done--you can't go to the vice president's house. You can go to the top of Mt. Rushmore regularly. People do that almost every week. In fact, I'm sure they're doing it today."
Nope--they're not.
The park's chief ranger told National Review that the general public is barred from the spot where Daschle entertained his lobbyist friends. Any ordinary slob caught climbing up the carvings would be arrested, jailed, and fined $500.
Why did Tom Daschle tell a lie? Because he got trapped in his own hypocrisy. He had to distort the truth to get out of the corner he'd just painted himself into.
This man can't shoot straight with the American people...and he's about to
become the Senate Majority Leader.
