Darien

I don't know how you did the Ped ICU.. my heart would break constantly. I get so attached to families, and we keep some of our traumas for up to 9 months, and some survive, but most don't. And I can't stop crying about this person in our unit.. and I think they know I am close to burnout, and told me they would not call me for overtime at all during these eight days off. I think you did the right thing in taking a break, and sometimes I think I need to go to a slower pace, that I'm getting too old for this. But I don't know how to do anything else but trauma, thats what I specialized in.. But the pace of a nursing home sure sounds good about now.. It helps to come in here and play and laugh with you guys.. thanks.. Sometimes no one else understands like another nurse..

Hope everyone had a great day....I missed you!! ~more grope, I mean group, hugs~ heh....

Hi Pam!:p Sending patience and good thoughts to you.. better you than me.. lol.

Hey Blue--things are nice and quiet here, how about on your end? ~hugs~

~very big hugs to Simply~ I admire the job that you do hon--one that truly has to be from the heart--hang in there!

Well as for the Pedi ICU, I don't know if I could do it now that I have my own kids, but the nursing home is just to slow. And the thing that gets me is that the mentality of nursing home nurses is so weird. You go in there after working in surgical/medical/nuero ICU's and with traumas and they think you don't know anything. They treat you like you are a newbie right out of school. Hon just take your days off and enjoy. And you are right, alot of time people just don't understand how us nurses think. We have a completely different sense of humor than normal people.

Thanks Pam. Hugs to you..

And you are right Blue, we do tend to have warped senses of humor sometimes.. LOL. Could you imagine though, taking a nursing home nurse into a unit?.. Talk about lost.. And I don't think they would understand the chair races around the unit to let off steam, lol. Had a surgeon walk in one time as we came flying around the corner, I was losing, lol. And he gave us such a look, and we all looked at one another and thought , oh shit! And as we started to get up from our chairs and become professional again, this surgeon came flying around the corner in a chair, screaming " beep beep".. and flew past us! The race was on then, lol.. I still lost, lol.. and me with long legs, but the guys had the stronger legs.. lol.. Hugs to you blue, I'm feeling a little better now just talking.. :)

Well Simply the staff I work with now are just horrified when I tell them about duck taping a doc to a chair putting a bag over his head and putting him on an elevator to ride up and down. Or hiding in a morgue cart to scare the shit out of some one.

Roflmaoooooooo..!! We did that just last month. And this is so morbid, but we had the attendant come up to our unit to supposedly take a deceased person out, and Andy, a very good friend of mine, layed on the bed, with the sheet over his head. When the attendant went to pull his "body " over onto the cart, he shot up and screamed " I'm alive, it's a miracle"! .. Omg.. the attendant went running with a horrified look on his face... and we were dying laughing.. so the attendant got mad and started leaving, then came back around the corner with a 60 cc syringe filled with saline and started soaking us.. needless to say, the water fight was on.. :D You sent him up and down the elevator? lmaooooooooooo oh god, I would love to work with you, you would fit right in with us nuts..

**Staggers back in*** Still any popcorn left???

Getting ready to take off for the day. Sounds like yours wasn't to bad, Pam.

And I admire you nurses as well. Don't think I could do that day in and day out.

Well it helps when you have good people to work with and I'm sure that we would get along great Simply, but I don't know how the hospital or other staff would fare.

LOL That is so true.. I can see us coming up with even more devious plots.. and you would love the nurses I work with, they are so kind and caring, but like us, they are whacked, lol.. Guess it's the old cliche', you gotta laugh or you'll never stop screaming..

Definately would be fun I'm sure.

Have to go for a while but will talk some more later.

That's my life motto.

Do you think that nurses have a higher incidence of depression? Just curious... all of my friends that are nurses seem to struggle with this. Perhaps because of job stress?

HI Mistresshoney, nice to meet you..

And I think there is a high percentage of nurses dealing with depression, many become addicted to anti-depressants. The strongest thing I will take is an occasional tylenol pm. We see so much, we face reality and mortality every day. Many times we see someone we love in the face of a patient and it comes slamming home to you that it could be that person next time. Everytime the trauma beeper goes off, we parents hold our breath, cause we know it could be our teen they are bringing in.
We don't just care for these patients, we take them into our hearts and it begans to get to you after awhile. Some go to counseling offered by the hospital to talk about it. Others like me, come and play on the board and talk with my coworkers about it.
I love what I do, I just think I'm experiencing burnout right now. My mind is saying , enough! .. But overall , the incidence of depression is on the rise for everyone.. not just nurses..
