Daredevil

I'm curious. What did you guys think of Spiderman?

I thought it sucked ass, but I can see how a kid who knows little about Spiderman could have liked it. Personally, the CGI work was so cartoonishly bad and so much a part of the movie, that it ruined it. I'm also at a lost as to why they made Peter Parker a high school kid. I liked Toby McGuire and J.K. Simmons though.

Okay...first off, I have low expectations for Daredevil, merely because I don't like the idea of tons of celebrities being in movies made for geeks. That and I just saw Jennifer Garner on Conan and she said it was a chick flick of sorts. But I'm still excited to see it because daredevil is inherently cool.
Secondly, Spider Man was done very well. The ONLY complaint I had about it is that he needed more cheesy one-liners. They put him in high school because they were trying to tell the story from the beginning, and in the origins of the comic, he was in high school.

True, but most of the episodes of the classic Spiderman cartoon from the 1960's have him as a University student, and the rivalry between Spidey and the green and Hob -goblins plays out better with a University student.

In any event, I like Toby McGuire as an actor, but I'd much rather see him in something like "Wonderboys." There just wasn't any magic in "Spiderman" for me, and I used to love Spiderman as a kid.

I thought they should leave SpiderMan & Daredevil off the silver screen. There's no way they're gonna be able to pull off the swinging & fighting sequences well; it's always looked too cartoony. As well as Raimi tried for SpiderMan, I still think it fell short. I can't imagine DD looking that much better. And I'm not exactly holding out much hope for The Hulk either... it's starting to look like an angry Shrek.:(

I quit reading comic books way before daredevil so I could care less.

its a known fact that marvel comics can't produce a good comics to movie or television adaptation.

out of a dozen or so tries thier only genuine hit has been blade.

Not that I even give a fuck, but from what I've seen in teasers and trailers, it looks bloody awful. Affleck is horribly miscast, and that DD suit is laughable.

Less glamour more substance should have been sought in the casting.

But they were trying to duplicate Spidey so...

I just hope X2 doesn't suck...

Stan Lee needs Money!!!!!!

But I have to say, what I 've seen of the Hulk looks great visually...even for a CG Hulk.

DD was horribly miscast.

Haven't seen Daredevil yet, but I'm addicted to the soundtrack.

Liked Spiderman, Liked X Men, LOVED Blade, thought Blade 2 was in sore need of a plot.

I went to see the movie Friday.

I have to see, I really enjoyed it!

There were some parts that made my head hurt, but those were mostly in the first third of the movie. Ben Affleck did a decent job of portraying the cockiness and aplomb of the original character. Jennifer Garner was.......<drools>.

Good villains, generally quick-moving storyline once it got going. Nice twists and turns. Not all that far from the comic book, I'm told.

I give it a 3.5 out of 5. I won't go back to the theater to see it, but I'll buy the DVD when it comes out.

And, as a great bonus, there were some tasty trailers: "The Core" (B-Movie goodness with an A Movie FX budget!!), "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" (I've been wondering when they were going to make this movie. Coolness awaits!), and "X-Men 2" (Soooooo, sooooooo many mutants. Anna Paquin is sooooo soooo yummy.).

DareDevil rocked. I don't see a damn thing wrong with it. Affleck is GOOD. If maybe a buncha jealous ass nerds who couldn't get laid with a million dollars stuffed in their pants weren't so jealous that Ben's a pretty boy they might actually notice how well he fit the mood and look of the comic. It was a great movie. The stunts were excellent. The fight scenes were well done without seeming ludicrously fake, the story held together well, and the atmosphere was fantastic.

I enjoyed X-Men and Spidey.... every other one has been forgettable.

Ever seen The Punisher or Captain America? *chuckle* good for a laugh I guess..... but get very drunk first ;)

Edited to add: Yay another two votes for it being decent.

DD has long been a favourite so i have hopes.

Like I said, I will still go and see it no matter what the reviews :)

Superhero movies are NOT easy to do, because the mediums do not really translate well.

Here's the thing.

Take the negative reviews to heart, and expect it to suck. That's what I did. Thank's to Rasta's review, I had an excellent time and enjoyed the movie. Now if you are looking for a transcendental experience, I suggest you look elsewhere, but for the price of a movie ticket it's not bad entertainment.

And finally, don't get to married to the comic. The comic is good, but it isn't God, and some stuff has to be changed. Appreciate the story for what it is, not for it's ability to copycat something else.

And get some popcorn.

I saw it yesterday and I liked it. Of course, I never read the comic, but as a superhero movie it was pretty good.

TB4p's Review of Daredevil

Plot: 6/10
Like most comic book movies, and Spider-Man in particular, DD follows a template. Matt Murdock suffers a tragic accident, his father is murdered, and he devotes his life to fighting injustice. The one thing that separated Daredevil from the rest of the comic-book pack was that he wasn't afraid to be a vigilante and kill people. He pops pain pills, and is less cordial than his superhero brethren. However, he goes on to "see the light" and "learn his lesson" — which to me seemed less because of the character's development than because they didn't want to get an R-rating and it made it easier to have a sequel. In total, the plot had the chance to expand beyond the boundaries of the genre, but backed off.

Acting: 8/10
The fact that Ben Affleck is playing Daredevil is really somewhat irrelevant, since many of the Daredevil scenes are CGI. So the question becomes whether or not Affleck is a suitable blind lawyer, and in that, he suffices. He's believable as the single-minded and zealous Murdock, whose whole world is tempered by the injustice he sees all around him.

The rest of the cast isn't bad, either. Jennifer Garner is every bit Daredevil's equal as Elektra, and they manage in a script which basically is there only to make them look good. While their chemistry doesn't set the world aflame, they share a fairly poignant scene where Murdock uses his superhuman "sonar" senses to "see" Elektra's face in the rain on a rooftop. Jon Favreau is great as Murdock's goofy law partner. Joe Pantoliano is a perfectly slimy journalist who is trying to get to the bottom of the DD mystery. Especially entertaining are the bad guys: Michael Clarke Duncan is frightening as Kingpin, and Colin Farrell is delightfully evil as Bullseye.

Action: 16/20
Please shelve the empty discussion of the fact that Daredevil, although possessing superhuman senses, is still an ordinary man who can't land from a 50-foot drop without breaking both his legs. This is a comic book movie, so such liberties are to be expected. My main problem with the action sequences was that because of Murdock's by day/by night existence, almost all the action was after dark. This made it an absolute bitch to see the action sometimes, and made the CGI/non-CGI boundaries even more apparent.

That said, Daredevil made the most of what it had to work with. While some of the sequences were straight ripoffs of Spider-Man and The Matrix, again, it's to be expected. But Daredevil and his archnemeses manage to tear apart a pool hall, a church, and an office building in pretty absorbing fashion. And some of the ways in which it was presented, especially through Daredevil's "mind's eye," were fairly remarkable.

TOTAL: 30/40

7.5 out of 10
