Whenever I right-click>save as a pic, my comp will ONLY let me save the pic as a .bmp instead of whatever the original file extension is. Naturally this is a pain in the ass because bitmaps are friggin huge. This just started the other day. Before that, I could save .jpgs and .gifs as .jpgs and .gifs.

Perhaps you are using AOL as your browser. If so you should open Explorer as your browser and download images from there as .jpg and .gif files. Otherwise, save the .bmp files and convert them to jpegs later using the Paint program or photo program you should have installed on your system.

If you are using Explorer as your browser, well i cannot help you there.

I know what your problem is and i have had it happen before. Let my find the fixes for you...oh yes hear they are :)

Delete the temporary Internet files. To do so, click Tools, click Options, click the General tab, and then click the Delete Files button

To work around the problem, click Tools, click Options, click the Advanced tab, clear the Do not save encrypted pages to disk check box, click View, and then click the Refresh button.

both of those are fixes that i recently found to not being able to save images in the correct format or at all.

you can also try>
Start Internet Explorer (if it is not already started).

Empty the contents of the Temporary Internet Files folder.
To do so:
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

Click the General tab.

Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files.

When you are prompted to delete all temporary Internet files, click OK.

In the Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk, remove the files that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged.
To do so:

On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

Click the General tab.

Under Temporary Internet files, click Settings.

Click View Objects.

The list of program files that are downloaded to the SystemRoot\Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk appears in the Downloaded Program Files window.
In the Status column, note the files that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged. Remove these files. To do so, right-click the file, and then click Remove.
When you are prompted to confirm the removal, click Yes.
Close the Downloaded Program Files window, and then click OK two times.
Save an image in Internet Explorer to test and determine if the issue is resolved.

Or couldn't you just open it up in Adobe Photoshop (or whatever) and save it as a jpeg? That's what I usually do.

donkey punch has it! It happens to me consistently too. You will have to keep emptying the temp files in order to save as .jpeg or .gifs

The joys of the systems/programs we have.

That's what I did for a while before I fixed it.

I fiddles with my Temporary Internet Files a little (this included empying the folder entirely) and I haven't had any more trouble. However, it's still a pain in the ass to do that.

Yes, yes it is but I have not found a permanent fix in any of my searching online. I just dump the temp file every couple of days. Nothing will piss me off more than to be working on a project and and all of a sudden I start getting bitmap as my only choice. If you search for images a lot then you have to dump more often. It can be very frustrating.
