"Dandy Don" Meredith.

DON MEREDITH, quarterback, 1960-1968

Don Meredith led the Cowboys to their first winning season and their first NFL Championship Game in 1966. Signed by Clint Murchison, Jr. before Dallas was granted its NFL franchise, “Dandy Don” played in two Pro Bowls and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1966. A two-time All-America at SMU, Don’s name was added to the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor in 1976.

What does their first year sound like????

The 1960 Season

Record: 0-11-1
7th Place in Western Conference

Synopsis:
In their inaugural season, the Dallas Cowboys were placed in the Western Conference of the NFL. But things were stacked against the Cowboys being an immediate success. Because of the rival AFL, the annual college draft was held well before the Cowboys even existed. That left the Cowboys to select three unprotected players from each of the other 12 NFL teams. Because of a rush to get the Cowboys on the field for the 1960 season, Tom Landry and his coaches only had ONE DAY to look over the names of the unprotected players for the expansion draft. Only 23 of these 36 players actually made to the Cowboys first season roster.

The Cowboys began with training camp at Pacific University in Forrest Grove, Oregon. Although the Cowboys were slow and not expected to do well, they managed to win one preseason game. This would be the only win of the season. The regular season began with a respectable showing against Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, but things got ugly as Dallas began playing the league powers and Dallas lost their first 10 games. Things got better as they stunned the New York Giants on the road and dueled the Giants to a 31-31 tie.

The Cowboys finished with a 0-11-1 record and they didn't have to look far to figure out why. The Cowboys were last in the league in points scored and last in points allowed.

Notables:
Dallas received NFL franchise on January 26, 1960
Clint Murchinson, Jr. & Bedford Wynne owners
Tom Landry hired as first head coach
Dallas placed in NFL Western Conference
Training Camp at Forest Grove, Oregon
Home Games played in Cotton Bowl in Dallas

so you two are the cowboy fans I've been hearing about. I heard there were three cowboy fans left, but I'm guessing that was an exageration.

I'm just kidding. I lived in Dallas for six years, and have absolutely nothing against the cowboys. I've been to many games in Texas Stadium, and I have to admit that the cowboys have the best looking fans in the country.

Not me! Saints all the way! (Yeah, I'm a little delusional! lol)
There is all kinds of amazing stuff you can find with a google search.... ;)

I was born in Louisiana. I went back there to go to college.

I've always had an emotional attachment to the Saints. I still have my brown paper bag with the eye-holes. :D

Sorry, not I, kind sir.

I already have three teams that require my lung power: Denver Broncos, Cleveland Browns and our new team. That's enough.

I was merely helping out my friend unclej -- especially since I've been hanging out with a true Cowboys fan lately -- I feel so sorry --it's getting harder and harder to watch their games.

Re: Sorry, not I, kind sir.

I'd be one of the Cowboys fans.

I got hooked on the team back in Troy Aikmans day when the sport came on cable here in Sweden.
I loved the passing game they had going then and decided to make them my team.

Of course it's an uphill battle these days since the other guys all are Vikings fans (Minnesota and all that).

darlin, of course I'm a fan or OUR new team, but DAMN, how can you waste your breath on the Broncos or the Browns?

There are teams I like, and teams I don't care one-way-or-another about, and then there are teams I can't stand. The Broncos and the Browns are in that third catagory.

:p

BTW, you're wrong.

Meredith was on the 1960 team as a rookie, but he wasn't the starter - he only had 68 pass attempts that year.

Dallas' starting quarterback in 1960 was Eddie Lebaron.

Reread the original question. No where does the word "starting" or "starter" appear.

Meredith was signed prior to the Cowboys becoming a franchise so he was the 1st quaterback on the team on the very day they became a franchise (January 28,1960).

Lebaron wasn't picked up until afterwards. The Cowboys picked him up in a trade for their 1961 2nd round draft choice from the Redskins.

Do NOT start on me. I know all about it -- believe me! I lived all over the country and have acquired these as my teams. ...And I don't EVEN want to hear about a certain superbowl when they played each other. (talk to the hand) :D

I think what I continue to like about them even though I'm down here is that they have incredible fans. There's just something so exhilarating about the tradition of throwing dog biscuits at your television set (Browns for those who don't know). It's practically a transcendental experience! *rolls eyes*

My family is a huge sports-oriented family and we all have different teams, so when we get together, the trash-talkin' gets pretty rowdy -- it's really funny to us, but could actually frighten any outsiders.
