Greetings, spurts fiends! In this thread, ole Reporter REDWAVE will bring you encapsulated versions of the leading news stories of the day, plus my own very special brand of pungent commentary you just won't get anywhere else.
The top story today is American Airlines' announcement it's cutting 7,000 jobs-- this coming the day after US Airways announcing it was filing for bankruptcy. American has already slashed 20,000 jobs since Sept. 11. This signals a renewed assault on the wages and working conditions of airline employees. As usual, the big corporations make US pay for the failure of THEIR system.
In ironic juxtaposition to this news is Bush's economic forum in Waco, to convince the public that he has a "steady hand" on the economy. Don't you feel reassured already? The last time this bozo gave a speech to try to steady the stock market, it took a nosedive! Even Bush had to admit "times are kind of tough right now." Kind of? What a master of understatement! Times are terrible for many Americans now, and are only going to get worse. Charles Schwab said the current bear market was "probably one of the worst I have ever gone through." Bruce Bartlett, a conservative former advisor to Pappy (Bush, Sr.), called the forum a waste of time.
And that's the mess we're in, today, Tuesday, August 13, 2002.
