Feeling philosophical this evening?
I went for average, a country can only be defined by its people. If you average the morals of a country's worth of people, you come out to average morals. At least that's the theory I'm going with.

Just trying to change things up every once in a while.:)

I can't answer

Because of my job my viewpoint is skewed and I cannot believe that is the nature of my country

Talking of which must go to work ...damn it's dark and cold out

if we're talking religious morals (if that's a thing) then the country I'm in is pretty lacking

but if we're talking fairness, tolerance and the greater good, then I think we're above average

Worse and worse since 1979. Materialistic, shallow, selfish, and all as a deliberate ideologically driven series of policy decisions by both big parties. If we want to know when Britain morphed from fair play and stiff upper lip to win at all costs buggery neighbour, it started there. And it's depressing.

Good question, Clowns. Lovely to have something a little abstract.

i think it's difficult to generalize. you have the power hungry and money hungry, right-wing retards, (hypocritically) pious and uptight people, those that want fairness and equality, and then a large group of politically and socially indifferent or naive.

Very interesting, DE. My guess is your perspective on the UK is from the South East? Here is the North East I think the look out for your neighbours thing is still very much part of the culture. And the massive petty crime figures which were part of the Thatcher years for us around here have dropped remarkably;

In terms of countering prejudice, the success of Soccer's 'show racism the red card', the very broad acceptance of first Civil Partnership and then Gay Marriage;

In terms of the readiness of the Brits to step up to meeting need at home and abroad, both the celebrated events like Red Nose Day and also the quiet generous giving during for example Christian Aid Week for local-run projects in the world's poorest nations;

The slow and late wake-up to environmental responsibility is bedding in nearly as surely as in such as Holland and Germany;

All causes me to vote 'above average'.

I feel the manner in which we managed to host the 2012 Olympics and Paralympic games - that vast host of volunteer 'games makers', and London's churches' response to the crisis of hospitality costs for overseas visitors just as two particulars about those fabulous weeks - gave a snapshot of a nation at peace with itself and the part it can play in the world. Am I being too optimistic?

Yeah. I saw this on another site recently. It made me question a few things. Thought it would be an interesting topic poll for here.

I'd have to agree with Trix - the average is the sum of its parts (I know that's not mathematically accurate but I hope you get the idea ). Where do we rank internationally? Ignoring our stereotypes I'd say we have a lot of historical injustices to apologise for, a lot of historical success to apologise for and we generally want to occupy the moral high ground. I also subscribe to the idea that while a person is smart, people are dumb - I read somewhere that a crowd has the same intelligence /decision making facility as a two year old. So basically I am a product of my society - a society which is becoming increasingly self aware. Interesting times indeed.

Yeah, yesterday's I know, but ...

Today's UK news:
2014 number of homicides in this country are the lowest in 40 years.
Given that our murder rate is much lower than many other nations anyway,
given that in the UK a large proportion or murders tend to be by people known to the victim, I would say that this is an indication of some improvement of moral standard overall.
Recorded sexual offences are up - perversely also a good thing, indicating a reduction in the proportion of victims unable to report crimes on account of fear or 'taboo' - now a factor dying if not dead in the water.

So I'm sticking with my 'above average' for the United Kingdom!

Piss poor. We shun people who don't conform into society's norms. We punish them instead of helping and supporting them. We have an attitude of "Well I don't want "them" living next door to me". Mental illness and addiction are still dirty words.
Then we have the materialistic brigade who's morals are so skewed that all that matters is money and status. We appear to live in a disposable society where it's ok to just throw people, marriages and families away when we get fed up.
But thankfully there are still some people around who have morals and aren't afraid to stand up and be counted.

We still see society as "us" and "them" We think all the "us" people are intelligent and worthy and the "thems" as ignorant and cast outs. How sad that we base intelligence and self worth on wheter or not people look and act like "us".

Find someone for a change that does not fit into your mold and enjoy the freedom of breaking out of a stereotype. Your best new friend could be someone that does not think like you and challenges you to be a better "you" instead of an "us".
