The cuts, which are said to affect between 560 and 1,830 workers at the agency, were planned for at least a week, contingent upon the confirmation of Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who oversees the agency. NOAA reported a permanent workforce of 11,758 in fiscal 2023, meaning the cuts could affect more than 10 percent of employees. One source who asked to speak on background told The Hill the firings began Thursday and will continue Friday.

One of the sources told The Hill that termination letters began going out to probationary employees at 3:30 Thursday afternoon. Probationary status applies to both recent hires and workers who have been recently promoted.

Another source said that many highly skilled positions were among those let go, and that recent hires were used to fill skill gaps at the agency. In some cases, the fired people had previous federal experience, the person said.

And a third source confirmed that the ousted employees included some who worked for the National Weather Service.

Not just civilian forecasting, but military as well. What could possibly go wrong?

Someone came up with an arbitrary number, 10% We get 10% RIFs in the private sector all the time. But we do it in a smart way. Managers always know who the deadweight is. So when a RIF comes, the deadweight goes. But these layoffs are just getting rid of the last hired no matter the future potential. Nobody conducts layoffs like that in the private sector.

And not just the last-hired, but anyone recently promoted or transferred.

Transferring between posts is common in public sector (like when someone moves house and takes a post closer to home, or gets married).

Even dumber. Those promoted or moving to a new org are usually your best performers.

Elon does,he's that dumb a manager.

The United States maintains two Tsunami Warning centers in the Pacific. The largest one is in Hawaii.
Musk Rats from DOGE have decided the US Navy as well as civilian merchant vessels no longer need tsunami warnings, and has ordered both shut down completely.

Hmmm problems at the FAA. Oh wait, musk has a solution with his business. Imagine that. Now focusing on maritime. What could go wrong at sea, ports, weather...

This is out of the project 2025 playbook. The want us all to PAY for weather reports obtained from satellites owned and launched by the U.S goverment (ie US!) The guy behind this part of project 2025 is the troglodite who owns ACCU-Weather. (True story) weather reports that effect millions of citizens and tens of millions of dollars of agriculture should only be provided tothose willing to pay

The incompetent dipshits at DOGE created a circus at NOAA

This tumultuous era for Noaa was for some staff crystallized by Doge’s decision to use a new email server to send missives from the federal government’s office of personnel ganagement to the agency. The email server was not secure, meaning that staff got dozens of spam-like emails in January, one of them with a lewd title about the president and another stating: “the next 4 years has an [sic] 99% chance of shit showers.”

😆

NOAA satellite data will be cut off by the Trump administration.

Sudden loss of key US satellite data could send hurricane forecasting back ‘decades’

In a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) message sent on Wednesday to its scientists, the agency said that “due to recent service changes” the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) will “discontinue ingest, processing and distribution of all DMSP data no later than June 30, 2025”.

Due to their unique characteristics and ability to map the entire world twice a day with extremely high resolution, the three DMSP satellites are a primary source of information for scientists to monitor Arctic sea ice and hurricane development. The DMSP partners with Noaa to make weather data collected from the satellites publicly available.

The satellites are functioning normally. They’ve just decided not to provide the data to anyone.

Stable geniuses.

I know this will come as a shock to the sociology, psychology, and journalism majors that dominate the left wing party, but it’s not the 20th century anymore. The Internet of Things is real. Temperatures are captured on trillions of devices every nanosecond, integrated with other forms of structured and unstructured data, and processed in real time on distributed clusters in data centers around the world. Weather information is shared among international governments and commercial entities. If it rains outside, you can look at your phone and get an accurate estimate of how many minutes it will be before the rain stops at your house.

There are over 11,000 NOAA employees and armies of entities that collect data from satellites, seaborne and airborne drones, and ground based devices. It might shrink by 1,000 to 2,000. You will never notice.

Trump can give us hurricane updates himself. 1751149755271.jpeg
