Do you have one? Which do you have? Why do you like it? If you don't recommend the one you have, which one would you recommend and why?

My dad just FedExd $500 US to me to get a present for the family for Christmas...and seeing as how that makes about $750 in our useless money...I figured that I might get something cool that we don't have...

We have a GE cheapie. Seems to work ok. I'm not sure how much difference there is between the low end and high end for DVD players.

With the spare change, you might think about a ReplayTV or Tivo. Very cool toy. Pause, rewind, and fastforward live television. Much easier to setup recording than a VCR.

Agreed, Tivo's are a good thing. And you can buy a decent one, AND a DVD player for that money, perhaps at Costco. You have those up there don't you Cath! ? Brand for the DVD isn't really important, but you can buy a decent one that'll play all types of discs for real cheap.

I have a samsung dvd player.

I like it cause now I can finnaly get all the cartoons i've been wanting to wartch :)

it was $280 Canadian

Mine plays DVD's VDC's (mpeg's burned onto a cd in a certin format i've not succeded yet lol) MP3's and CD's. it will also play cd rewritable cd's so if i burn mp3's or cd's i can play them
and eventualy should I burn a dvd I can play it on there too... (year year years down the road)

It's a good modle there are better though.

I have the PS2 for a DVD player. I haven't had any problems yet. The only thing is you have to buy a different part for the remote. I just use the controller but it can be trying at times.

bump!

Thanks all...I will check out that link after dinner, thanks Bob!

I have both TiVo and a DVD player

- I know, I know....but they're a tax deduction....so....

Really recommend DVD - not only for the quality and life of your movies (tapes get that skew going after a while) - but there are many added features in your average DVD - behind the scenes featurettes, chapter selection, bloopers, etc. that are really cool. I have a Sony myself, but there are many good brands....and you'll average about 200 dollars or so for a good one.

TiVo is excellent - saves the VCR programming nightmares and so forth. About 300 dollars will get you one of those - not counting the hundred dollars or so for the lifetime programming subscription (the unit calls a toll free number every night to get programming changes).

Hope this helps!

Well, if you ask hubby, (who works in a technology dept for a college), you should look into Miranze's. They are professional ones that get installed into college mediated rooms, and can withstand TONS of play.

NOW, for those of us who are living in the real world, and don't have 3k to spend on a DVD player... We have a standard RCA that we have never had any problems with in the almost 2 years. Ours was not top of the line even at the time. I think we paid around 180 for it, 2 years ago tax time.

Video's over all get run down, especially if you are looking at one you record on personally. The sound qaulity and video image bites the dust quickly, more quickly depending on which format you use to tape (for instance, turning a 2 hour tape into a 6 hour one will cut the quality down by a ton, and the life span)

I have a onkyo dvd player. It really depends on what your TV is like and whether you have surround or not. I have Harmon Kardon surround and a top end reciever and it rocks the whole house. I had some house guest who could not get enough of it.

I figured out that I have enough to probably go with a Sony DVD and then I think I will be a REALLY nice mommy and buy the kids one of those X boxes if i can still find one.

LOL. You're a proper techno-babe, Ginj.

Got a Fisher at $175, the model was priced at $270 actually, but the one I wanted, for the $175 price wasn't in stock, they gave me the Fisher for that price instead, who says Walmart sucks?!

*cough* buy a PS2 before you buy an X-Box, PS2 is superior and will have a lot more titles, at least that's in this gamer's opinion
