Curious-Emergeny Contraception.

yep...

...got them here. No big deal. Get them from the chemist the "day after" and about as effective as the pill in normal use.

I have taken the morning after pill, years ago, through my doctor.
I was as sick as a dog, blech. Vomiting, felt like crap but did not get pregnant.
It cost me as much as a normal doc's visit. I knew about it from a leaflet I had seen on the doc's surgery wall; last in for a check up.
FDA and AMA does not lol 'compute' in New Zealand.

Ok thinking back to the one horrible accident me and my exgf ever had.

Condom broke/fell off during sex on a friday night. Her school which is supposed to offer emergancy contrceptavies, all days of the week during normal business hours, pretty much refused to help us. When I called the lady at the health center the next morning to ask for help she acted like she had no idea what I was talking about. Her school is very conservative and traditional.

The pamphlets the center hands out says they have emergency contraceptive but from what I have gathered from other people they try to keep students from getting it. I am not sure if this is all of the people there or just some of them or if it is a secret health center policy.

So we call the hospital in the city and they do the same song and dance. Oh we don't have that we can't do that blah blah blah.

We drive an hour to the Richmond which has MCV in it. MCV is a teaching hosptial very well respected. They did not offer emergency contraceptives. The nurse who talked to us was very very sorry that she could not do anything for us but she did tell us where we could go.

We drive another 30 min to a hospital sort of in the Richmond Suburbs. They do have it just like the nurse told us. So we talk to the people there and talk and talk and talk and talk. Fill out form after form after form after form. Some of the extra work was because my gf would not use her insurance because she could not let her parents find out.

Well when the doctor finally starts his exam so she can actually get the prescription he tells her that he can't do anything else till they contact her parents for consent. She of course says that she is over 18 and she was by a little over 6 months.

The doctor does not believe her. Even after she shows him her ID. Luckly she has a couple of forms of ID and she eventually convinced him that she was over 18.

Well while that is happening I get a little visit from the police. The doctor has already called ahead to them to have them go talk to me. My gf always looked real young and I can see him thnking that she was 16 or so but once he see's her ID he should have been convinced. Well, he called the cops before he saw her ID so in the time it took for him to see it and be convinced that she was over 18 I had plenty of time to talk with the nice police officers.

Who were not very nice at all because they thought I had knocked up some 16 year old girl when I was 19. Eventually it all got fixed but no one ever apologized to any of us.

Sometime around 9 pm we finally get out of the hospital and go get the prescription filled down the street. We spent 12 hours trying to get that one prescription and I think it was a little over 100 dollars not positive on that though. This was a little over 3 years ago and I am horrible at remembering numbers. We also spent money on about 30 gallons of gas from driving around everywhere.

All and all pretty fucking pathetic but thats VA for you. I think there might have been a law change now and it is easier to get emergency contraceptives here now. I still don't think you can get them with out a prescritption.

why...

...should sex be so risky and scary?

Age of consent here is 16 AND privacy is a matter of law for those over and under 16. There are some GPs who are traditional and will not provide contraception to young people, but there are alternatives that are readily available.

I may be wrong but I don't think the day after pill requires a script from the GP. Information is readily available in the chemist shop (pharmacy) and the cost isn't exorbitant.

There is nothing funny or moral about unwanted pregnancies nor is there anything positive about trying to raise a child when you aren't ready for it. Reality is that sex often starts long before reaching "legal" age (a society imposed rite of passage) and making a difficult situation more difficult isn't logical.

England is the most prudish of the Euro countries yet it was a breath of fresh air to me when I came over from the US.

Planned Parenthood. It has been around since I was young. In a heartbeat, you can always go to Planned Parenthood.

Just last wek at a "Conseil d'Administration" for our local school (11-15yrs) we had a doctor explain what was availbale for the kids, how they can get it - [telephone no. published on notice board + availability of help within school] - given by school nurse, and if there isn't one, one will come to the school when phoned. Pupils requesting it are advised to talk with parents, but it is always up to the individual.

Information sesson for all kids, every year. This is all following French Govt. directives but we still had to vote for it - so every Governing Body in the country for every College, has to be informed.

The last info I read about was for RU-486 so that tells you how dated my knowledge is! I couldn't imagine trying to track that down here...it's such a damn backwards area. I don't mean to open the abortion can of worms here but there is only one doctor here that is supportive of the procedure.

There's no Planned Parenthood here and no emergency clinics. The Women's Center is more of a support group for mothers & children and doesn't deal with reproductive issues.

In Washington, one does not have to visit a doctor to get the morning-after pill. I'm not sure of the exact procedures, but one just has to visit a pharmacist to get it.

I'm with ksmybuttons: if in doubt, go to Planned Parenthood (or at least call first). I believe emergency contraception is a mega-dose of birth control pills that has to be taken within 24 hours of the unprotected sexual encounter. I've heard you're out of commission the rest of the day, with massive stomach cramps, nauseau, and general pain. Of course, that's a small price to pay to avoid an unwanted pregnancy.

My wife and I also had a broken condom incident and decided that three kids were enough so we went to the local Planned Parenthood and got the morning after pills. It cost us $75 if I remember correctly and she had to fill out a lot of forms. It was actually three pills, one she took immediately, and then two others to follow. It worked like a charm. She did not display any sideeffects either.

Emergency Pill needs to be taken within 72hrs, the earlier the better.

It's two pills to take. The first one you take straight away, the second you take 12hrs after the first.

It says on the package that some people may feel nausea, strange feeling in the stomach and some may even vomit. If vomiting, then run for a new set.

In England you can get prescription from a health centre, family planning clinic and similar. I can get it for free if the prescription is from one of these places. Otherwise I go to the chemist, get asked a few questions (heard stories how they sometime interrogate you though), then you pay £19.99 for the packet.

In Sweden the procedure is pretty much the same. Doctors or straight to the chemist. Pay 120SKR.

Information leaflets you find in most health centres etc. In UK they seem to have started big campaign now, I keep seeing adverts in magazines for it.
