About private clubs for CDs: It's only a historical documentary, but I found it interesting. A show on PBS called American Experience had an episode (Season 36, Episode 6) called "Casa Susanna" that described an underground network of transgender women and cross-dressing men who found refuge and community at a house in the Catskills during the 1950s and 60s.
