Hi Everyone :)

I've volunteered to moderate round two of the critics choice awards. Dr. M did a great job laying a foundation, and he gave us a lot to build on.

My suggestions for this round..please discuss/debate

1. Stories that were nominated in round 1 cannot be nominated again (probably a no-brainer, but hey)

2. Let's open this up to the general author population, but limit the number of stories to 10. In other words, first come first serve.

3. I think 5-10 judges should be picked the same way. However, if you submit your own work, you cannot vote on it.

Let's talk to Laurel about getting a blue C or something like that to denote critics choice stories. But I do think there should be some qualifications...such as getting a cumlative score of 7 or better on a 1-10 scale.

I'd like to officially open the contest by the end of the week, once we're done hashing things out here.

I'm gonna have to sit this one out, I'm gonna have a very busy week in RL. Will come back later, though.

Week? YIPES!

For clarification....

I'm potentially thinking story entries must be submitted by the 17th

Judging must be over by the 1rst

Results will be posted by the 5th of March

When I said week, I just wanted to see what other changes you guys wanted to see with the contest, not that we'd be up and running and over by the end of the week. :) Sorry for any confusion

Well I am happy to help out with the next round :D

SO for the nominating....anyone can nominate but its the first 10 stories that will be "judged" so to speak. Is there a limit to one nomination per person in that case?

And then the voting system..have we decided what that will be this time?

Good idea about getting the symbol..that'd be cool if we could :D

Since I'm capping the number of stories to be judged, I think it's only fair to say that you should only be able to nominate one story as well.

This time around I think we will use the 1-10 scoring for each story (excluding your nomination) to determine the "critic's top choice stories" and then a 3,2,1 weighted vote to determine the "winner" of round 2.

I'm going to PM Laurel now to find out about the symbol thingy

Hey Delicious!

You can count me in for round 2, but you may have to re-explain how it's going to work for me, I can be kind of slow.

OK, thank you for clearing that up for me, DN, but I'll still have to pass.

This week, I'm seeing a lot of banks about a loan for the buisness I'm starting, and the rest of the month, I'll be working on getting contracts with costumers.

I just feel that I don't have time to really concentrate on giving stories a really good read-through.
When things are more back to normal, I'll be back to shove my opinions down people's throats again.:)

Good luck with your business flicka!

Glad to have you on board John :)

I am proposing that we post on several boards that we are accepting submissions for round 2, and the first 10 stories that are pm'd to me will be accepted. Only rule is that the story must be up on lit, and not have been judged in a previous round of the critic's choice contest. You may submit your own work or that of someone else, preferably with their permission.

We will also have 5-10 judges (depending on interest). The only prerequisite for judging will be that you have published on lit. You may also submit a story for the contest, but you may not vote on stories you have submitted whether or not you wrote them.

Judges will vote 2 ways:
1. you must rate the story on a 1-10 scale (10 high)
1. weighted rank (3,2,1...3 high)

I am waiting to hear from Laurel about a "C" ranking, (for stories that perhaps rate a 7 or better on the 1-10 scale) so that we can acknowledge those stories we consider the best of the best.

The 3,2,1 rank would determine the round's "winner" and again, I'm waiting to hear from laurel as to whether or not we can get them acknowledged on the front page.

Once I hear from laurel I'll set the official dates (deadline for story submission, date I must have votes in, and the day results will be submitted..see my above post for tenative dates).

Right now we have 3 judges and are still looking for more :)

I'll be a judge this round. Even though I'm all miffed that I "wasted" a story on a dry run. Boo hoo. ;-) I'd better get off my butt and submit a few more things!

Oh, and somebody asked about the avatar: no, the drawing was not me (though it was my drawing) but THIS is me. ;-)

Count me in as a judge. Just out of interest, can judges nominate stories? It could end up with nest feathering if they nominate one of their own.

It was me who asked about the av MM. Foxy lady btw.

Pass on this round

DN,

Thanks for taking up the moderation of round 2. I agree with the things you proposed. Since January is a dreadfully busy month for me, and I'll be out of the country for more than a week without availability of internet access, I think it's best to pass on this round. I'll gladly volunteer for a next one, though.

Good luck, and happy judging to all the 2nd round critics,

Paul

With Earl and Madame Manga we now have 5 judges!

Still no word from Laurel..but I think I'll open the contest today anyways.

First I'd like to finish getting judges...5 is enough, but if anyone else would like to be judged, please pm me by midnight tonight (friday) eastern standard time. Once we have all the judges we can open the contest for submissions.

i can nominate one of my stories?

Yes.

I will be accepting stories starting Saturday(as in friday going into saturday) at midnight est. First ten submitted to me will be accepted for the contest.

Here's what I need from the critic (aka the guy making the nomination)

1. Title of the story
2. Author of the story (if not you, please let me know if you are submitting the story with or without their knowledge so that I can drop them a line)
3. Link to the story

*****

We are also still looking for judges...if you're interested, let me know by midnight tonight (friday 1/10) est.

'Critics choice' is probably a fine concept but I have several reservations about this.

I'm hoping that these particular rounds are merely dry runs at what will become an open competition, if not then I'm afraid words such as, elitism, conceit and plain old snobbery will abound, if not in threads then at the very least through other authors minds.

I'm pleased that this round takes in other author's works and am hoping that eventually the idea will exclude participating critics from including their own work, otherwise this good idea would be just a 'back slapping club' and consequently hold no validity for special mention on the front pages.

Just my thoughts.

Good luck with this one - but will bow out of this round as well.

And just an opinion here - I agree with what was stated above - I really don't think "critics" should be nominating their own work. I know we did this for the first "trial" but thought the reason behind that was if we screwed up, we would only put that damper on our own works.

Hope to read some great stories!

Luck,
kristy

Hopefully you won't be using the official voting system here. A new story of mine just went up, it has two votes, and both are 1's as that is the average. So no matter what anybody else honestly votes for the story, it will never make it to the top ten in the voting catagory. Now normally I would have waited until morning to see if any of my stories had been published here, but this time I was online anyway at 3am in the morning so I checked. And what do ya know Bed-n-Brunch Ho was posted, and it had 1 view, and 2 votes, averaging 1.00 for the vote count, how nice. Now I could do the same thing to every new story published here too, but I won't. You see, even with these childish attacks, my stories always average out above 4.30 by those who really read them. So I'm terribly sorry if I'm not a part of the clique in here, but I'll let my stories talk for me about how well I can write.

I also agree that critics should not be able to nominate their own work. We did that in the first round purely so we could see what system worked the best without upsetting any poor unsuspecting authors!

I think if it is allowed in further rounds it will only be perceived badly and even if there is no currupt intent behind self nominating (which i am sure there wouldn't be) it would LOOK like there was and we do not want to create something that will only be taken as a joke now do we?

It is an open competition, which is why I've posted notices and requests for submissions all over the boards.

Beyond that, to answer several people's comments about critics not nominating their own work, I honestly feel that as long as they can't vote on their own work, there's no reason to exclude them. Some of the judges are doing double duty, having judged both the last round and this one. But eventually, that may be a rule that future moderators can and will institute.

I'm not sure how to respond to this, except to say that the contest was created out of a feeling of disssatisfaction with the current rating systems and a desire to laud stories that are well written. A sort of from authors for authors award. The contest is open to anyone who's written a story for lit, and they have to submit their story. We don't go and pick on every story that comes through.

Should you want to put a story up for the award, we are still accepting submissions.

Regarding cliques...I'm sorry you feel that there are cliques here, but I've found the boards to be very open. You get out of them what you put into them.

More stories!

Hey guys, we still need more stories for round two, so please pm me with stories (by you or not) that you think deserve some acclaim :)
