Creating Round Characters v. Flat Characters

I'm new at this so I haven't done many characters. I find that my round characters tend to be based on someone I know or certain characteristics I've seen in real life. Are they someone desperately missing a lost love, but the only option is sex that is paid for. That sort of thing.
