I have a question for those of you who celebrate Christmas but do not live in the U.S. and celebrate Thanksgiving. As you may or may not know, tomorrow (Friday) in the U.S. is the "biggest shopping day of the year" and kicks off some major holiday shopping. We are hammered with ads trying to lure us into the stores at 5:30 a.m. to get the best deals.

I for one do not like to venture near the stores on the Friday after Thanksgiving, but some people love it. My question is - do others have a such a shopping day ritual or something similar?
Curious to know.

We have three major shopping periods each year. The big national Booksale in February, Christmas shopping (started in September this year, a new record for IKEA) which is most intense the 3 days before christmas, and the big national Sale Period, which takes place between 25th of December and 5th of January, when everyone return the christmas presents they didn't like, and buy the things they DID want, at a more reasonable price.

In the UK there are (in order) the January sales, which start 27th/28th December,
Spring sales,
Easter sales,
Early Summer sales,
Summer sales,
Back-to School sales,
Autumn sales,
Winter Sales, and finally
Christmas sales.

"Then, bloody January again." to quote from Flanders and Swann.

When will women learn that the week-end is for sport, and that shopping is NOT a sport.

In India

Hmmm... yes. According to the Hindu calendar, the time between Dussehra and Diwali (festivals) is supposed to be very good and auspicious for purchasing gold, household appliances and doing up the house. The Sony, Videocon guys come up with SO many schemes, draws, prizes, bonuses...

I live in an area where there are a lot of muslims. In the Muslim community, the month of Ramzan, especially the last ten days are a shopper's delight. The market place is open till about 4 in the morning for the night time shoppers. The markets are lit up the whole night through and the crowds are fun. :)
