Crappy Restaurants

In one of my stories, the protagonists brought a friend over from Denmark for a visit, and she LOVED McDonald's in all its awfulness, simply because it was so decadent. Shamrock shakes weren't in season, but she was quite prepared to flash the staff in an attempt to get them to make one for her.

Gross food has its own intrigue, I guess. That's what Freja told me...

I would like to get drunk with you.

The food in Melb is stellar. This place... THIS place.

The website is shite, but the one on QV square is brilliant. I've sat outside in a storm on a date, just to go there. :D I'm not a big fan of chocolate, but they have all kinds of interesting crap there other than chocolate.

My current story was inspired by a conversation my partner overheard at Brunetti's; at the table next to hers were a younger woman and an older man working out the terms of a sugar-daddy arrangement. My opening scene is set there, though I didn't name it.

Rumi is fantastic, and really good with dietary restrictions too. Red Spice Road likewise on both counts.

Not in the same league, but I feel obliged to mention Wings of Glory because their motto is "Where the good stuff comes out of the glory hole".

Waiiit, Brunetti's do UNICORN CAKES?

Eebs, my dreams - they've come true. This boy can finally die happy.

[At some point this line of self-character assassination is going to bite me in the arse. I can feel it.]

This may be the least productive post I've had here, and that's saying a lot.

What's with all the crappy restaurants that populate stories on Literotica?

I get it. As a writer you want to use whatever tool you can to ground your reader in the story. Name recognition helps.

But having Olive Garden, Texas Roadhouse, and Outback as favorite restaurants is just... odd. Not that it's unreasonable once in a while, but it seems that if a character mentions taking someone to their favorite place, it's very often one of those three.

Also, lots of Golden Corral and Waffle House mentions. That's more understandable, I guess. Although Golden Corral needs to be taken behind the barn like a rabid dog and put out of it's misery.

The sad truth is... At least in this neck of the woods, a lot of people *like* those places. I can't tell you how many people have recommended Applebees to me. Ick. I tried them twice, many years ago. Never again.

Actually... Most of the people I know, do not cook. As in, not ever. They might heat something up from its frozen or otherwise prepared state. Or even make something like Hamburger Helper or boxed mac and cheese. My own mom hated to cook. The few things she ever made from scratch were not good.

Thankfully I love to cook. I do remember making spaghetti for my brother once. He thought something was wrong with the sauce because it was thick and rich. My mom used some sort of a packet that produced a pinkish watery mess with a few almost red, fuzzy bits in it.

I guess if you are accustomed to eating that sort of food, that's all you know. My mom eats most of her meals out and so does my brother and his wife. They seem to love that sort of food. Not me. I hate it when we have some family get together at one of those places. I sometimes decline going or at best have just a drink and a green salad. It makes no sense to me to pay for crappy food.

Also in this neck of the woods, there are few 24 hour places or even very many open after 8 or 9:00 p.m. So if you want a restaurant late at night, you will wind up at a crappy place.

Another thing I have noticed is that this area is being taken over by crappy chain places. Eek! Give me good cooked from scratch food. But no. Most of those places wind up closing for many reasons.

I have made many cross country moves and I can tell you that if you live in certain parts of this country, your only choices are crappy chain places.

But heck. In writing a story, it doesn't have to be totally true. Not here anyway. The writer could easily write about a nice restaurant even if they haven't ever been to one.

I don't get this. I have way more fun making up names for restaurants and describing them any way I like. I've come up with some pretty cool places, if I do say so myself :)
