Italians 3D-print key ventilator piece for just $1 to help battle coronavirus — so medical company threatens to sue them

After two Italian volunteers used a 3-D printer to manufacture a desperately needed ventilator component for those stricken by the coronavirus, the medical company with the patent for the device threatened to sue—even as the printed valves saved at least 10 people’s lives in a hospital in the northern Italian city of Brescia.

“There were people whose lives were in danger, and we acted,” Cristian Fracassi, who along with fellow volunteer Alessandro Ramaioli made the valves, said in a Facebook post on Sunday. “Period.”

Fracassi and Ramaioli, who work at 3-D printing startup Isinnova, were asked by physicist Massimo Temporelli to assist with producing the valves for only $1 after supplies from the source medical company were not forthcoming. The company, which charges $11,000 a piece for the devices, did not share the technical specifications for producing the valve—leading the volunteers to measure the valves and print from those numbers—and has threatened to sue for patent infringement.

6.7 Million People Ordered To Shelter In Place In Bay Area

Nearly 7 million people have been ordered to “shelter in place” around the Bay Area of northern California.

Six Bay Area counties announced its “shelter in place” order Monday for all residents, directing them to practice social distancing by staying home for the next three weeks in an effort for public health officials to combat the spread of the coronavirus. The order, which goes into effect 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, affects more than 6.7 million in San Francisco, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Marin, Contra Costa and Alameda counties. It is effective until at least April 7 and is the most restrictive yet in the country.

Although the order isn’t a full lockdown, it’s unclear how it will be enforced, but calls for the sheriff or chief of police to “ensure compliance.”

An Atlanta hospital administrator interviewed on CNN today said that he had located a Mexican company making face masks that would provide a million of them for $7 apiece. The previous price was 58 cents apiece. He said he'd still probably have to buy them, hopefully getting in his order before some other hospital snarfed them up. Maybe they'll use their profit to help pay for Trump's border wall.

More than eight weeks after the first US case was detected,
the federal government is still struggling to conduct widescale
testing for the virus.

Compounding the problem, laboratories are reporting shortages
of key supplies needed to run tests.

It is clear that something is off about the supply chain.

Could they find sterile swabs in labs meant for animal testing-
or ,maybe, research labs ?

Hospitals and doctors say they are critically low on swabs
that are needed to test patients for the coronavirus

NY Times

Doctors are also reporting another problem: a shortage of swabs
used for the tests. Without enough swabs, hospitals must ration
tests, administering them to only the sickest patients.

The backlog of pending tests is the latest setback in what
has been a sputtering and potentially catastrophic response
to a growing pandemic. Initially a severe dearth of tests in
Massachusetts and across the United States hampered efforts
to diagnose, track, and contain the virus.

Beth Israel Lahey Health has halted outpatient screening for the
coronavirus, reserving tests for the most severe cases at its network
of 12 hospitals. The long, skinny swabs used to collect material
from the upper throat have been in global demand.

Here’s why Singapore’s coronavirus response worked – and what we can all learn

Singapore’s response to the coronavirus has been held up by many around the world as a model. As of this week, the country has had 266 total cases (with zero deaths), and its infection rate is much slower than the rest of the world.

The first thing that helped with its response was it was ready before the outbreak even occurred because of the SARS outbreak of 2002-03.

Short Form:

Singapore was Ready, Took immediate action, and wasn't diddle fucking the numbers to look good.

Pudgy wasn't ready, avoided immediate action, and, worried about how it would effect his "reputation"!

Boris Johnson tests positive for coronavirus

British prime minister Boris Johnson has become the first world leader to publicly announce he has tested positive for the coronavirus.

Johnson has changed course in recent days and instituted a three-week national lockdown Monday, and he announced Friday that he developed symptoms over the last 24 hours and tested positive for the virus.

I bet he has a ventilator standing by!:)

Dumbass MS Gov: THIS AIN'T CHINESE NORTH KOREA! Also Dumbass MS Gov: MY TRUCK, MY RULES!

Time for an update on GOP Mississippi Governor Tater Tot Skeeter Bite Reeves, known on his birth certificate as simply "Jonathon Tate Reeves," and what he is not doing to fight coronavirus. He's been readin' Bible to Mississippi, and he's been sayin' for extra damn certain AIN'T MISS'SIP' GON' BE SOME KINDA ROOTIN-TOOTIN' HIGH-FALUTIN' DICK-TATER-SHIP LIKE CHINESE NORTH KOREA, BET YOUR BOTTOM DOLLAR, WOOOOOOOO-EE!

At least we think that is what he is saying, he's so stupid-looking we can't bear to unmute the sound when we watch him on video.

But you know that thing where Republican governors and state legislatures hoot and holler to anybody who will listen about small government and the tyranny of the federal government, but when bluer (smarter) cities in their own states try to exert local control, and in so doing offend the governor's sensibilities, their commitment to small localized government just goes out the window? Happens a lot when educated southern cities try to get rid of their fucking Confederate participation trophy statues and monuments.

And it's happenin' with coronavirus, and TATER AIN'T GON' HAVE IT. Out of one side of his mouth, he's saying Mississippi ain't gonna be no goddamn North Korea, but out of the other, he is saying "MAH TRUCK, MY RULES!" like that other absolutely darling GOP Mississippi gubernatorial candidate. And in this case, his "truck" is the entire state of Mississippi.

Does the Great River drain all the STUPID out of the mId-West and deposit it in MS?

Dogs being trained to sniff out COVID-19

A British charity has teamed up with scientists to see whether dogs could help detect COVID-19 through their keen sense of smell, they said on Friday.

Medical Detection Dogs will work with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and Durham University in northeast England to determine whether canines could help diagnoses.

It follows previous research into dogs’ ability to sniff out malaria and is based on a belief that each disease triggers a distinct odor.

This could be handy, but dogs can get the virus too! How many canines will be sacrificed?

Can the coronavirus infect someone twice?

Up to 10 percent of coronavirus patients leaving medical facilities in Wuhan after being tested negative for Covid-19 seem to have subsequently been re-infected, according to the South China Morning Post. This is not the first time that there have been reports of re-infection. Nevertheless, scientists say that it is unlikely that the virus is striking twice.

This is not the first time that the coronavirus has appeared to infect the same person twice. At the end of February, a 40-year-old woman tested positive ten days after leaving a healthcare centre in the Japanese city Osaka, after apparently having been “cured”. At the same time, a Chinese man from Jiangsu province who had officially recovered from the coronavirus was admitted to hospital three days later, having becoming infected “again”.

Short Form answer:

Who knows?

Gov. Ron DeSantis doesn’t want infected ‘foreigners’ to be ‘dumped’ in Florida and ‘using up resources’

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) complained on Monday that people aboard a cruise ship where four have died could be “dumped” in Florida.

During an appearance on Fox News, DeSantis was asked about the Zaandam cruise ship. According to reports, 73 passengers on the ship have flu-like symptoms. At least two have tested positive for COVID-19.

“And not only that, I think a lot of these are foreigners,” DeSantis told Fox News. “We cannot afford to have people who aren’t even Floridians dumped into south Florida using up those valuable resources.”

Is he not a Christian Trumpublicunt?

San Jose McDonald’s workers strike after their employer fails to provide sufficient soap during pandemic

Workers at a McDonald’s restaurant in San Jose, California abruptly walked off the job because their employer had failed to provide supplies as basic as soap so that they could continue working safely during the coronavirus pandemic.

In a New York Times column about impromptu strikes breaking out across the United States, veteran labor reporter Steven Greenhouse reveals that cooks and cashiers recently launched an impromptu strike because “they didn’t even have enough soap to clean their hands, and were not provided with gloves, masks or hand sanitizers.”

Yesterday I asked my friendly grocery man if they ever got any Toilet Paper in? He said, "Yeah but you have to get here by 06:00 to get it when it does come in!"

‘Officially worse than 9/11’: Americans react as US coronavirus deaths surge to 3000

Overnight coronavirus deaths in the U.S. surged, increasing by 565 to over 3000. There have now been 3148 coronavirus deaths in America, as the total number of confirmed cases grew by almost 20,000 to 163,479.

Americans are struggling to grasp what lies ahead. On Monday coronavirus task force coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx revealed the federal government now predicts the best case scenario will be 100,000 to 200,000 COVID-19 deaths.

Okay, can I panic now or will the whole system break down before July!:eek:

President Trump declared if the number comes in at 100,000 he will have done “a very good job.”

Viet Nam only cost 55,000 dead. But that is so last Century, eh?

Doctors optimistic Bay Area lockdown successfully bended the coronavirus curve: report

The aggressive actions of local governments in the San Francisco Bay Area may have successfully bent the coronavirus curve.

“State leaders and doctors are cautiously optimistic that the Bay Area’s early moves to lock down residents two weeks ago have prevented surges of coronavirus patients from overwhelming the region’s health care capacity thus far,” Politico reported Monday.

“Six Bay Area counties were first in the country to adopt aggressive tactics with an enforceable March 16 order requiring residents to stay at home,” Politico noted. “After 14 days — the outermost period at which symptoms are believed to emerge post-infection — doctors at area hospitals are now reporting fewer cases than they expected to see at this point, and officials credit the lockdown with stemming the tide of patients they feared would flood into emergency rooms.”

Race for vaccine tests limits of drug innovation

From medical workers struggling to care for the rising tide of COVID-19 patients to the billions of people told to stay home to slow the pandemic, everyone is waiting for one thing: a vaccine.

There is no known treatment for the new coronavirus that emerged in China late last year and has since proliferated across the planet, infecting more than half a million people and claiming more than 30,000 lives

In mid-January, researchers from China published the genetic sequence of the virus, firing the starting gun for dozens of research labs across the world in the race to find effective drugs.

The approaches have varied dramatically. Some teams are looking at the effects of existing medicines as potential treatments, some are experimenting with repurposing common drugs. Others are using cutting-edge technologies to fashion radically new types of vaccines.

Let us hope that in the rush to get a cure, that the fixes don't have an unexpected downside.

Navy captain pleads for help in extraordinary letter as coronavirus explodes on his air craft carrier

The captain of the nuclear aircraft carrier the USS Theodore Roosevelt is begging for help while the coronavirus ravages the crew.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported Tuesday that between 150 and 200 sailors have tested positive for COVID-19 on the carrier of more than 4,000. Capt. Brett Crozier wrote a four-page letter begging the Navy for help while they’re docked in Guam.

“Due to a warship’s inherent limitations of space, we are not doing this,” Crozier explained. “The spread of the disease is ongoing and accelerating.”

He asked the Navy for “compliant quarantine rooms” onshore in Guam for his entire crew “as soon as possible.”

“Removing the majority of personnel from a deployed U.S. nuclear aircraft carrier and isolating them for two weeks may seem like an extraordinary measure. … This is a necessary risk,” Crozier continued. “Keeping over 4,000 young men and women on board the TR is an unnecessary risk and breaks faith with those Sailors entrusted to our care.”

Trump supporters are already questioning coronavirus death toll to make the president look good

Some prominent Trump-supporting media personalities are already trying to defend the president’s response to the coronavirus pandemic by questioning the official number of people who have died after being infected.

As documented by Media Matters researcher Jason Campbell, right-wing radio host Mark Levin this week suggested that the official coronavirus body count tallies shouldn’t be taken at face value because there’s no way of knowing whether someone who died shortly after getting infected really died from the virus.
