so, are you looking for ones you might never have heard before, or do you just want people to mention their favorite covers?

the band dada does excellent covers of california dreamin' and simon and garfunkel's scarborough fair.

probably the 2 all time best covers are jimi hendrix all along the watchtower (bob dylan) and van halen you really got me (the kinks)

ok..anyone who can play an instrument or carry half a tune has done a cover of Cohen's Hallelujah right??

But of course...a few standouts.. :catroar:

Mr Buckley's....no need to say anything.

Dresden Dolls - who doesn't like a little insanity with their fourth and fifths?

Clare Bowditch. Did a live radio studio version. One of those songs you remember where you are the first time you hear them. clickhere

Rufus Wainright's LIVE version...not the one on shrek..dear god, no. not the one on shrek.

Some that sucked eggs...

Bob Dylan's. lol ok not that bad...but not good, mate.
Kendra
Allison Crowe

and

STAY AWAY FROM U2's version..i'm begging you. I have nothing against Bono...other than the obvious, but no no no, in the words of a sweetheart, "NOT RIGHT!!!"

Anyways..yeah...having one of those Hallelujah days.

What does the song mean to you?

stolen from somewhere i can't remember said:
Hallelujah means something different for everyone who listens to it. In 1985, while at a concert in Warsaw, Cohen explained his idea for the song; "I know that there is an eye that watches all of us. There is a judgment that weighs everything we do. And before this great force, which is greater than any government, I stand in awe and I kneel in respect. And it is to this great judgment that I dedicate this next song."

To some people, this directs to a God. To others, it represents love. To others still, this song reflects their respect for the great entertainers that they admire. And to others still, the song represents death. I agree with all of them. Buckley's version especially feels mortal and wounded, but at the same time directed toward a lover, or perhaps an eternal lover, or perhaps just himself, in his own secret poetry.

(lol someone might kill me for saying this but... )

Johnny Cash's cover of NIN's Hurt.

Holy hell.

Sometimes, listening to them back to back...you forget who is really covering who.

Fav would have to be Tori Amos' cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit (is there nothing that woman cannot do?)

I loved Frente's Bizarre Love Triangle too.

my current favorite would be B*Witched's cover of Mickey *would so get with the hot greek girl in the band*

Whiskey In The Jar - Metallica, No clue who is the original artist. Irish drinking song but Jimmi mutilated it severely heh so it's not exactly a cover.
Turn the Page by Bob Seger. It's funny that Metallica does covers because others do Metallica covers. Pantera has a interesting cover of Whiplash.

Pretty much Every cover of Come Together. Originally by the Beatles'.

I like the Michael Jackson one.
But Aerosmith does this song the best. And I can currently sing it and feel arrogant enough to think it's about me.

Love that song.

Hi beautiful! Okay I have only heard her Don't Look Back in Anger - awesome. I am so totally freaking out about the others though - I had no idea. New mission in life - hear all of these covers! Thank you so much!!!!

peter frampton did a version of while my guitar gently weeps that I think is even better than the original. eric clapton is so overrated.... IMO.

I dunno who the jimmi is that you're talking about, but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that whiskey in the jar was a thin lizzy song that metallica covered.

dennis de young of styx covered the old hendrix song fire on one of his solo albums. it's extremely cheesy, but by god, I like it.

on the other hand, gary moore also covered the song. I should have eaten that one up with a spoon, c'mon! a guitar god like gary moore covering hendrix?!? I fucking hate it... I can't remember the name of the cd, but the music was like, all dance or techno or some kinda crap... I dunno how they categorize that stuff, it's crap to me. gary's solo was pretty rocking, but I still hate the fucking song.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think it was Bette Midler that did an incredible cover of When a Man Loves a Woman.

Phish did alot of good covers and I like Greenday's cover of Browneyed Girl
