Emily and Mike could feel the heat as soon as they disembarked from the plane. It felt so different from the damp and cold of the British winter they'd left behind. Emily squeezed Mike's hand and whispered to him.
"We're here," she said.
"We are," Mike agreed. "Honeymoon at last. Despite everything"
Emily and Mike's courtship had been 'of its time'. They were beginning to get serious in 2019, just before the first wave of Covid had begun. Mike had suggested to Emily that she move into his apartment rather than the two of them spend lockdown apart and Emily had agreed. Neither of them could have known it would have been such a risky move, given the length of time they'd be cooped up together. But it had worked. They'd fallen deeply in love and, when Covid was over, in the summer of 2022 they'd married.
Everything about the wedding had been 'basic' though. Venues were so backed up with rescheduled bookings that they couldn't find anywhere for the Reception. So, after a simple Registry Office service, they had gone to the pub with a few mates and that had been that. No reception, no honeymoon. It didn't matter to Emily and Mike though, they were too loved up anyway. But it had been Emily's suggestion to go away for Christmas instead. Their families hadn't been happy about it but they'd sold it as a honeymoon and nobody could deny them that.
Emily had been 'skyping' her friend Ida in Norway all through lockdown and when Emily had suggested that she and her (now) husband Jon might want to join them somewhere warm for Christmas, Ida had jumped at the chance. Emily had met Ida and Jon when they'd all been freshers at Uni in Nottingham. Although they'd done different courses, they'd been assigned to the same halls of residence in their first year and had stuck together after that.
Emily had rather fancied Jon, but he and Ida had hooked up instead. It had probably been for the best. Ida and Jon had stood the test of time, whereas Emily had had a lot of wild oats to sow. In fact it was only when she'd met Mike ten years later that she'd finally stopped sowing them. Mike had calmed Emily down. He was that sort of guy. Competent, confident, the sort of guy you could trust and, to Emily's eyes at least, he was 'fit' too.
Mike hadn't been to Uni. His father owned a series of new car dealerships and Mike had gone straight from school into the family business. Unlike his Dad, Mike was the least likely car salesman you could ever meet but as his father stepped away from the business to spend more time in his villa in Spain, Mike had taken over the day to day running of the dealerships. Something he was good at.
Mike and Emily had met when the two of them had been set up on a blind date by friends. They weren't an obvious coupling but Emily took a shine to Mike and it was her who had done most of the running. Emily was good at getting what she wanted and in truth it hadn't taken too long for her to convince Mike. She could be very persuasive.
And now, here they were sitting on a coach, being transferred from the airport to the all inclusive beach resort that was to be their home over Christmas and New Year.
"I can't wait to see Ida and Jon," Emily told Mike excitedly. "You'll love them. I know you will."
Mike smiled. He'd had mixed feelings about inviting Ida and Jon. He was worried that he might be the odd one out, not having been to university. But he went along with it. He knew he didn't really have a choice anyway. When Emily got the bit between her teeth there was no stopping her in any case...
