Have you ever heard the joke about country music that says, "What happens if you play a country music song backwards? You get your truck back, your wife back, your dog back..." :D

Well, that brings to mind the idea of taking the lyrics of country songs and writing short-short stories based on them. They don't have to be erotic, though it doesn't hurt.

I'll present the first song, and if any of you wish to write a short-short story about it, please do.....

"Wildfire" by Michael Martin Murphy (somehow I doubt that this CAN be an erotic story, so it is a good way to warm up to the challenge).

I love that joke, and the self-depreciating humor of the writer/singer of "Darlene" (you have to hear his concert version where he talks about all the essential elements of a country song and trying to fit them all in the last verse).

And this might actually be an amusing chain story idea. Some would clearly be comedic or goofy (same thing?), but listen to Dan Seal's "They Rage On" and you'd realize that any story based on it would fit right in here. And while I don't like country music in general, I can appreciate the well-written and performed ones.

Seriously, if this one does not bring out some nice imagery, then nothing will.

They Rage On, by Dan Seals

She's a small town girl with no room to grow
And he's a reckless boy with no where to go
They're like birds in a cage with no place to fly
So he parks the car and she holds him tight

Chorus
And they rage on
Somehow searching for the answers
In the night like shadow dancers before their time is gone
They rage on

On the same dark night two more people meet
In a rented room on a cross town street
And she's lost her youth and he's lost his dreams
But for a while they feel like they used to feel

Chorus

And they rage on
Against the lives that this world gave them
Hoping something's there to save them
They rage on rage on

And somewhere between right and wrong
In the grey between dusk and dawn
They tell themselves they're not alone
As they rage on

Chorus

They rage on
Against the lives that this world gave them
Hoping something's there to save them
They rage on
Rage on

Not bad at all for a hick. :D
