How much money would someone be willing to give me before I agreed to step one foot inside ANY store on today, the day after Thanksgiving? I have yet to imagine a number that would make me see anything besides the walls of my aprtment for the next 24 hours, so make an offer, lol.

Oh come on, Ungenderless... The day after thanksgiving is the best time to jump start your Christmas shoplifting.

Hahaha! Christmas shoplifting...only you could take something that normally makes me shiver in terror, and put a silly spin on it, Jenny. :D

But I'm still not going out there. *_*

I'm not going any farther than outside to check the mailbox today or any day this weekend. I have plenty of leftovers and won't even have to do any grocery shopping until next week.

I've never understood why the day-after-Thanksgiving was the most popular shopping day. Is it just that everyone takes Friday off as well as Thursday and they've nothing better to do?

I mean, I understand going for great store sales...but that's putting the cart before the horse. The stores have those sales because it is such a big shopping day. It's not a big shopping day because stores have those sales....I think....

How *did* it become such a big shopping day in the first place?

Back when I first started in retail, it was still a big day, and we opened early (8 am, IIRC), but I think what happened is that stores started opening earlier and earlier, trying to get the jump on the next retailer. The discounts got deeper if you chose to shop there first, etc. It's snowballed from there.

I wish I could go shopping today. Stuck at work though telling other people what to do

I worked at Best Buy one year the day after. The morning is a nightmare, but the afternoons aren't so bad. I think most people that want to shop or are bargain vultures get it out of their system in the mornings, so by the time afternoon rolls around they're all at home, resting their feet.

If you need to go shopping, there's no reason to stay away from most stores in the evenings. They will be somewhat busy, but usually not packed.

I have no desire to go out, but there's a certain excitement in it, and even a potential sense of community, that can make the mild inconvenience worth it. That's the way I feel standing in long checkout lines at the supermarket the day before Thanksgiving, too. You know why everyone's their, and vice versa, and it's kind of fun.

It's only fun if you've never worked on the cash register end of things.

After 20 years or so in retail management, it would take a major miracle to get me out there in those crowds of idiots (plus, the same sale will be likely running all weekend).

I have to go to Ikea today!
I have to work there tomorrow. I lose. Not the same IKEA, I assume. But they suck globally.

Fuck!
My wall clock leapt off the wall yesterday and busted its workings. Now I'm afraid to go to Target to get a new one...

Wal-Mart had a flat screen offer that tempted me. But then I heard last night that people were camping out in front of some stores for it, and then on the news this morning, they interviewed a guy who stood in line starting at 1 AM, and at the end, the line was "mismanaged" and people who got tv's were behind him, while he didn't get one.

I try to avoid Mall's between November 1, and January 3rd. Bah Humbug!

I worked today. Work started at 0700 so all were required to be there at 0645. Can you imagine my surprise when I was informed by several of the staff that they had already visited stores, on their way in to work?

Did I do any shopping today? Yep, on the way home I stopped in a little, out of the way Drug Store I frequent and picked up a box of Cigars.

Tomorrow I will be stopping at one of the larger Home Imrpovement stores, but not for any of their specials. I am looking for certain items such as Plywood, screws and of course spring clips to attach lights to my roofline.

Shopping for food or gifts? Nope, not for a few days. (I do have to slip out and get my wife her Birthday Gift but I already know what I'm getting her so,,,,,,,)

One thing I will do once again this year is becoming somewhat of a tradition. The last few days before Christmas I will pour myself a car cup full of coffee, toss a couple of inoccent looking toys in my pockets, and head down to the local mall and watch the bedlam. I have even picked out my spots for this years sojourns. Places where I can watch the most people while being out of the way.

Cat,

Glad you weren't contributing to my misery. Worked 11p to 11a with non-stop lines and grumpy people. Came home to sleep for a few hours so I can do it again at 5a tomorrow.

I agree ... I worked five years in retail. Christmas was the worst part of the job ... not only did we have carols playing from Nov 11 onwards (they at least didn't start decorating the store until after Remembrance Day), and wind up music boxes/santas/figures/etc ... the attitude of people on the other side of the counter was horrible. I used to tell friends that nobody should have the right to go out shopping during the season until they've worked a Christmas in retail.

We went.
Reluctantly.
But we went. Only because we're having an 'early' christmas with the family tomorrow, before Min and I return to UK on Monday. We'llbe spending the actual christmas with my folks and my sister.

We didn't leave until around 11, it wasn't too bad in the world market - I dragged Min and her mum there for some English christmas crackers. Then we hit Target. It was OK, much less crowded than I thought. Then lunch, the restauarant was packed, but service was quick and food great.

Then we hit the mall. One of the bigger ones. Baaaaad mistake. Had to go there for the sports shop to get the promised Washington redskins t-shirt for my youngest. After a browse around Macey's, we escaped the noise and crowds. Min was beginning to fray at the edges. Now I'm at home wrapping while Min and her mum have gone back for the rest of the shopping. I reckon I got the best deal.

Stillnowhere as bad as I expected.
