Steven Hans had been a huge nerd growing up, but also an athlete. Growing up he had been the only kid on the football team and also playing Dungeons & Dragons in his off time. He'd always been drawn to being creative not only with his imagination but also creative with his hands. His mother taunt him how to sew and put costumes together using foam and hot glue guns. By the time he was a freshman in high school he was making his own costumes for Halloween events. Once in college he used his talents to create a social media following with his cosplays, which also led to opportunities with companies making video games, comics, and movies. He'd be hired to make costumes for the heroes in upcoming projects and essentially be a "booth babe" by greeting and taking pictures with people while the company showcased the whatever it was.

It was a rare thing as most cosplayers making any money doing gigs were the ladies and he definitely didn't have the assets in that regard. But a good costume was a good costume and doing conventions was an easy way to make money on the weekends which trying to get through school. These days a lot of his classes were online so even if an event flew him out of state he could still handle the double work load of school and a job.

This convention started as any other, he met with the booth runners the day before the event to lay out the plan and what would be expected of him. The game was an upcoming fantasy RPG called House of Fantasy from a very well known and established developer. The game by all metrics online was absolutely hype and Steven was to be dressed in a fantasy armor set much like the box art "hero". Players of course would pick and chose their race, gender, and battle class so Steven's "hero" was just an atypical archetype of the MMO game, but it was still something players coming to the game could identify with in theory.

The armor came out great this time, the developers had given him a lot of reference photos with plenty of time in advance to sort out the design and get it made. He was proud of it, and it would absolutely hit his highlight reel on Instagram.

Cadence was excited. It was her second comic convention and getting tickets to this thing was almost impossible. Somehow, she had managed though. She sat in line and by that, she waited from 6 am earlier in the year on two different devices her laptop and her tablet —well, three. Her phone too. Cady had waited for hours to get tickets and was one of the last few people to get a four day pass before they were sold out.

She had sewn her own cosplay costume for this too. She was going as Sailor Moon. Cady wasn’t a professional cosplayer though. It wasn’t something she would do as a job. Cady had almost given up on her own costume and just bought one on Amazon.

She wasn’t even sure if people would know who she was since she was black. Most hard core fans wanted you to stay within the realm of the show meaning if the character wasnt black and you were, then you shouldn’t dress up as them.

Still, she was doing this for fun and she looked pretty good too. Her curves were well represented in the costume. She streaked her black hair with blonde. She looked hot!

She’d always been a nerd even in high school, theatre nerd, comic book nerd even a manga nerd. Cady just enjoyed being herself. Now as an adult, she was a writer and had an office job. This was like her own little vacation.

Cady was especially excited about this comvention because that new game House of Fantasy was coming out. She already knew she would be staying up all night playing it. Cady waited impatiently by the exhibit hall doors for the exhibit hall to open. That was going to be her first stop. Her favorite cosplayer was supposedly going to be there too.

Cady only hoped she could catch him at the booth.

Despite has convention experience, Steven was always marveled by just how many fans of things there were. You could look out into a crowd and see the sea of people who all shared roughly the same interests with different ways of expressing it, some just by being here, others with fan t-shirts and branded clothing, others cosplay, it was really awesome to see. He always felt at home in places like this, like being with your people or something. It was actually a bit surreal he made money on top of it, and even more surreal that people who followed him would show up eager to get a picture with him regardless of whatever thing he was promoting. It was strange having fans, especially when it was fans who liked you for your hobbies and things you would do for fun anyway.

He was glad people liked it though, and always liked to give people a high five, hug, or compliment about their costume. People were so creative with their costumes and it was fun to see the skills on display. Even if the cosplay itself wasn't particularly good, he appreciated that someone took the time to try and that was worth encouraging. The first step to getting good at something was to suck horribly at it first after all.

About halfway through the day he saw a beautiful girl with coffee skin in a Sailor Moon outfit. It wasn't the most detailed costume he'd seen, but she had sized it right and it hugged her body in all the right ways. She was a ways back in line, but he caught her eye and gave her a thumbs up to let her know he saw her well before she was at the front of the line. It took about 90minutes before it was finally her turn and he again admired her body up close, jesus christ, it was unreal.

"That's a nice Sailor Moon! Great job!" He told her with a grin. "How'd you make the Tiara?" He gestured for her to stand by him for the photo while awaiting her answer.

Cady had been standing in line for a little under 90 minutes moving from looking at her phone and tiktok along with all of her social media accounts to see what was happening during the convention. She made mental notes of where to go after this and the closest place to find food. She hated getting convention food because it was severely over priced but also hated the walk from either a fast food spot or store back to the convention center.

Maybe she could find a food truck or something? She glanced up from her phonr thoughtfully before she caught sight of cosplayer at the beginning of the line giving her a thumbs up.

Holy shit, was that Steven Hans? Her heart hammered against her chest. She looked down at her cosplay and briefly wondered if he was saying he liked her costume or not.

Cady didn’t let herself over think that. He probably wasn’t. In fact, he probably wasn’t even giving the thumbs up to her. When he turned his attention back to what he was doing, Cady felt slightly flushed. No he was looking directly at her, right?

Anxiously, she tugged on the bottom of her skirt. It now felt like even longer that Cady was waiting to get to the front. The 90 minutes went by though after getting her phone fully charged. Cady stepped up to the booth, grabbed her free poster with a small postcard that had game goodies for the upcoming game.

She finally got to the part of the booth where you could take a selfie with the cosplayer.

"That's a nice Sailor Moon! Great job!"

Whoa! He really had been giving her a thumbs up. This was absolutely wild!

“Um, thanks! It was alot of work and a lot of poking my finger with needles.” Cady laughed.

He was checking her out, wasn’t he? Holy fuck! She lightly played with the ends of her pigtails. Cady stepped into the area where Steven was.

"How'd you make the Tiara?"

“I didn’t make it, it was given to me by a talking cat.” She joked then pressed her lips together,”Seriously though theres this metallic material that I got from Joann’s Material store and fake pretty stones that I glued in the center. I poked a whole on the sides and put the elastic string on it. I could never do my cosplay the level you have yours at. “

She smiled for the selfie.

“Maybe I will catch you around and you can give me some tips later? I don’t wanna hold the line up. ” She was pretty sure he would say no. How likely was it that a pretty well known cosplayer would even be open to doing that?

“I didn’t make it, it was given to me by a talking cat.”
Steven laughed, "Nice!"

”Seriously though theres this metallic material that I got from Joann’s Material store and fake pretty stones that I glued in the center. I poked a whole on the sides and put the elastic string on it. I could never do my cosplay the level you have yours at. “
He shrugged and looked down at her again, "Looks pretty good to me. Not everything has to be level 100 to be good." He told her.

They took the selfie and he pressed against her side to get into frame.

“Maybe I will catch you around and you can give me some tips later? I don’t wanna hold the line up. ”

Steven nodded, "For sure, I actually have a lunch break in like..." He paused and pulled out a pocket watch that would fit perfectly in the fantasy world. "Twenty-ish minutes? So maybe I'll see you at the food court?" He suggested raising an eyebrow.

She was exceptionally pretty, and Steven didn't think she knew it or at least didn't think she was a perfect 10 by anyone's standards. She didn't carry herself in that way. Steven had been around the scene for a few years now and he met some exceptionally attractive girls doing cosplay, he was no stranger to that. This girl however was beautiful in a non-manufactured way, no filters, no crazy make-up, no special lighting, just plain old geeky hot.

"Oh uh, what's your name?" He asked her.

"For sure, I actually have a lunch break in like..." Cady watched as he pulled out a cool pocket watch out. The way that it went so well with his costume blew her mind away. "Twenty-ish minutes? So maybe I'll see you at the food court?"

She nodded her head eagerly. While Cady disliked the food court food and how expensive it was; there was absolutely no way she was turning down that offer. A chance to hang out with a professional cosplayer who was also incredibly hot, yeah she would definitely be at the food court in twenty minutes.

“Yeah, definitely!”

"Oh uh, what's your name?"

“Oh right, duh. I’m Cadence but you can call me Cady.” Which she realized she could’ve just said Cady. It wasn’t like there was anyone around here that would call her Cadence. When she was handed back her phone by the other guy that worked there, Cady smiled at Steven.

“I’ll see you soon.”

As she walked away, she couldn’t stop the sway of her hips moving side to side. It was like her body had a mind of its own. Fuck, Cady couldn’t believe she was going to have lunch with Steven Hans! Fucking Steven Hans!

It wasn’t like she had never been on a date either or didn’t have experience with guys and Cady definitely wasn’t a virgin. She shook her head. That didn’t matter, they were just having lunch.

She quickly pulled out her phone and typed in her friend group chat that she was having lunch with or possibly having lunch if she could catch him at the food court with a pro cosplayer.

Steven was excited to hear her agree, his smile couldn't be any bigger and he feared his grin made him look stupid....or like a predator.

"Alright Cady, sounds like a plan." He almost said "date" but managed to fix the word before it popped from his lips.

“I’ll see you soon.”

She walked away and Steven watched her, the sway in her hips made him smile even wider. Maybe she was teasing him or maybe that was just the way she walked, either way it was quite a joy to watch and her outfit certainly didn't hide the shape of her. Tight and firm if he had any guess, Cady was probably no stranger to squats or hip thrusts, he wondered if she was a gym rat as well as an anime nerd. The next 20 minutes turned out to be closer to 40 thanks to an unrelenting line of people eager to see the game and take a photo. Finally he was cleared by the producers running the booth to go get lunch and Steven could have booked it faster to the food court without running. He grabbed a slice of pizza from the Slice of Life stall, and then frantically looked around the seating area to try and his little Ms. Sailor Moon. It took him a couple of minutes but he finally saw her from behind at a table by herself, her long hair and the tight costume was his clue.

As he approached he was sure it was her, "So.." He said circling around her with a smile. He set his tray down and sat across from her, "a thicker thread would be my advice next time."

He gesture to the side of his body, "A thicker thread will pull your seam tighter and it'll become next to unnoticeable unless someone gets really close. Plus it'll make the outfit more comfortable to wear." He explained. Then he smiled at her, "Also 'hi there' by the way."

Cady had visited a few booths within the twenty minutes she had been on the floor. She walked into the crowded food court and tried to find an empty table. She had to stand on the side until one opened up thiugh and quickly grabbed it.

She pulled a pop tart out of her bag and sat down scrolling through her phone to see what events were happening within the next hour or so.

The fresh aroma of pizza hit her nose before the sound of Steven’s voice came.

"So.." Steven said circling around her with a smile. He set his tray down and sat across from her, "a thicker thread would be my advice next time."

“Thicker thread?” Cady tilted her head curiously at him.

"A thicker thread will pull your seam tighter and it'll become next to unnoticeable unless someone gets really close. Plus it'll make the outfit more comfortable to wear." He explained. Then he smiled at her, "Also 'hi there' by the way."

Cady smiled at him. “Well there is nothing better than being comfortable.” She broke a piece of her pop tart,”And hi.” She took a bite of her poptart. Cady didn’t want to just sit there and not talk more with him.

“I was thinking of actually attempting to make weapons too or well, the transformation wand. I didn’t have enough time this year. “ She paused,”Do you enjoy it though? being a professional cosplayer? It doesn’t like take the fun out of it or anything?”
