Steven Hans had been a huge nerd growing up, but also an athlete. Growing up he had been the only kid on the football team and also playing Dungeons & Dragons in his off time. He'd always been drawn to being creative not only with his imagination but also creative with his hands. His mother taunt him how to sew and put costumes together using foam and hot glue guns. By the time he was a freshman in high school he was making his own costumes for Halloween events. Once in college he used his talents to create a social media following with his cosplays, which also led to opportunities with companies making video games, comics, and movies. He'd be hired to make costumes for the heroes in upcoming projects and essentially be a "booth babe" by greeting and taking pictures with people while the company showcased the whatever it was.
It was a rare thing as most cosplayers making any money doing gigs were the ladies and he definitely didn't have the assets in that regard. But a good costume was a good costume and doing conventions was an easy way to make money on the weekends which trying to get through school. These days a lot of his classes were online so even if an event flew him out of state he could still handle the double work load of school and a job.
This convention started as any other, he met with the booth runners the day before the event to lay out the plan and what would be expected of him. The game was an upcoming fantasy RPG called House of Fantasy from a very well known and established developer. The game by all metrics online was absolutely hype and Steven was to be dressed in a fantasy armor set much like the box art "hero". Players of course would pick and chose their race, gender, and battle class so Steven's "hero" was just an atypical archetype of the MMO game, but it was still something players coming to the game could identify with in theory.
The armor came out great this time, the developers had given him a lot of reference photos with plenty of time in advance to sort out the design and get it made. He was proud of it, and it would absolutely hit his highlight reel on Instagram.
