Cosmetic surgery?

Life has been hard and my body reflects that. After giving birth to and breast feeding 3 wonderful boys I'm left with stretch marks that actually look worse than my emergerncy c-section scare from when I was 19. After dealing with a sudden weight gain and years of treatment that did absolutly squat until a new doctor said "Hey you've got Hashimots's thyroiditis and cancer, but we can fix that" I've managed to loss a lot of weight but still have the belly. I feel better than I ever remember feeling in my life but I look like I've been rode hard and put up wet. My face and skin look aweful. I go nowhere without make up and then there's my nose. A long time festering hatred of this aweful thing makes me want to hack it off. Many times I've looked long and hard at the exacto knife and wondered...... It's time to get busy and do an overhaul.

Has anyone ever had any cosmetic surgery? Where do you start? I've looked online but somehow every web page says the same thing. I feel like there's something missing. Something they aren't telling you. Anyone have any feed back? You can just private message me if you want. What's the costs? Are the results what you wanted? Would you do something different? Is there something you wish you would have known before you had the procedure(s)?

I haven't had any cosmetic surgery, but If I were thinking about it, I'd start with my regular doctor and/or a shrink to make sure I was doing it for the right reasons. (it sounds like you've got the right sort of reasons, btw.)

Your regular doctor and/or shrink should be able to refer you to someone who does the kind of work you need, rather than someone who is more interested in doing what will earn them the most money.

I agree with Weird Harold...go with who you know first and get a referral from there. As in his case, I have not had cosmetic surgery, but I know someone who has, and she discussed it openly with me.

She had reconstructive surgery, and she swore by her surgeon. He told her exactly what to expect, and explained every risk. She DID have complications...but she knew what to expect beforehand, which made it much easier to deal with. She did say the pain of recovery was worse than she had anticipated, but she also says it was worth it.

A few caveats: find a plastic surgeon who uses a LICENSED anesthesiologist. You would be amazed (or...maybe not...) at the number of surgeons who use someone who isn't actually licensed to do that.

In fact, make sure the surgeon is licensed for whatever procedure you have. They have to learn these procedures...ask for evidence of how many have been done, how the results were...ask for referrals. If a doctor hesitates about giving you this information, find another doctor!

Good luck...

Definitely go to your primary care physician for a referral,
and also make doubly sure that the plastic surgeon is
board-certified, etc. etc. etc.

Good luck!

i just spotted this thread..i am actually having some cosmetic surgery done...I am not sure where you live but i have a very good doctor here in NY..I will let you know how happy i am in a few weeks....

Definately let me know how it goes. I hope everything goes ok for you. Is it totally elective? I'm gonna start saving now. This shit is expensive!

You might want to start here. It's the American Society of Plastic Surgeons website. There's a lot of information there.

I had a breast reduction done Feb 2001. I looked online and researched it, emailed someone who had one done. I finally went to my primary Dr and asked for a referral to a plastic surgeon. When i went to that appointment i was told on the spot that i was a perfect candiate for the surgery my insurance just needed to approve it. They wouldn't have approved it unless it was medically necessary and my back pain ,breathing problems and chest pain were enough for them. My insurance paided the whole bill, i never saw anything from the Dr's or Hosp. I love the results. I wouldn't have done anything differently.

i know EXACTLY how you feel about this part of your body.
many times i have imagined what i would look like if my fine example of a roman nose were to be shaved into a nice, even little button.

but then, so far it hasn't impacted externally on my life - i have friends, i am [apparently] sensual and attractive, and other people have told me it gives me a certain 'something interesting' - so i am hesitant to mess with it.

and given that i have undergone more surgery than a person should by the age of 36, i am also reluctant to have any more op's.

good luck with your saving, and i sincerely hope that the end result is what you wish for :rose:
